John B. Adams '71
Chairman and CEO, The Martin Agency, Richmond, VA

Mr. Adams got his start in the advertising business not long after graduating from Hampden-Sydney. Under his leadership, The Martin Agency has enjoyed great success, becoming the first agency named "Agency of the Year" five times by Adweek Magazine, most recently in 2009. The agency has created advertising campaigns for Mercedes-Benz, Quiznos, Saab, Spike TV, Miller, Olympus, Delta Faucets, Wal-Mart, and NASCAR. The Martin Agency most notably created the Geico Insurance Gecko and the "brown" theme for UPS.

 

Tom N. Allen '60
Chairman, The Clovelly Corporation, Richmond, VA

Mr. Allen, a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Virginia School of Law, has served as chairman of The Clovelly Corporation since 2001. Mr. Allen formerly served as director and board president of Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, chairman of Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, chairman of Leadership Metro Richmond, and director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation. He is a board member of the Virginia Historical Society.

 

Michael H. Blackwell '01
Regional Development Manager, Mid-Atlantic, Crescent Resources, Charlotte, NC

Mr. Blackwell joined Crescent Resources in 2011 as regional development manager of the Mid-Atlantic. Prior to joining Crescent, he was a vice president at Willis North America. There, he worked with the firm's national real estate practice, helping multifamily operators and developers drive performance through improved management of risk and insurance expense. Mr. Blackwell graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 2001 and is currently completing a master's degree in real estate development at Georgetown University.

Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney College in 1978, Mr. Brown attended Harvard Law School, where he graduated cum laude in 1981. He served as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond from 1997-2005. Mr. Brown also served as Law Clerk to the Hon. Robert R. Merhige, Jr., United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Corporation for Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest and a member of the City of Richmond Charter Review Commission. He co-founded BrownGreer in September 2002.

 

Charles L. Cabell '74

Mr. Cabell focuses his practice on four areas including commercial real estate, corporate, estate planning and the representation of institutions of higher education. Dr. Lawrence B. Caplin '86
Founder and CEO of the Oral Health Impact Project and Dentrust Dental, Pipersville, PA

Dr. Caplin is founder and CEO of the Oral Health Impact Project, which provides in-school, comprehensive dental care to children at the greatest risk for dental disease. Dr. Caplin is also Founder and CEO of Dentrust Dental, a corporation established in 1990 that provides dental care for governmental institutions throughout the United States, including correctional facilities, juvenile centers, foster care, and the United States Military. In 1997, Dentrust was awarded a contract for primary dental care of active duty military personnel, and to-date is the only private company in the history of the Department of Defense to foster such a partnership. Today, Dentrust is one of the largest providers of institutional dental care in the nation.

 

Cynthia L. Citrone
Pediatric Occupational Therapist, Southport, CT

Mrs. Citrone is a graduate of Ohio State University. She serves as the Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Cancer Care, and is a member of Near & Far Aid Association, Agape Society, Michael Bolton Charities, and the Westport Young Woman's League.

 

Richard P. Cook '99
Co-Portfolio Manager and Co-Founder, Cook & Bynum Capital Management, Birmingham, AL

Mr. Cook co-founded Cook & Bynum Capital Management in 2001 and has served as an officer of the firm since inception. Mr. Cook is a co-portfolio manager of the firm's investment vehicles and also serves as President of the trust company that houses the firm's mutual fund, The Cook & Bynum Fund. Previously he worked for Tudor Investment Corporation in Greenwich, Connecticut.

 

William Gayle Crutchfield, Jr.
Founder and CEO, Crutchfield Corporation, Charlottesville, VA

In 1974, with only $1,000, Mr. Crutchfield founded Crutchfield Corporation in his mother's basement. Since then, Crutchfield Corporation has grown into one of the nation's largest specialty direct retailers. He is a 1965 graduate of the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce. Mr. Crutchfield holds an appointment as a Visiting Lecturer at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. In 1997, Governor George Allen appointed Mr. Crutchfield to the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors where he served until 2005. He is a current member of the Chief Executives Organization, World Presidents' Organization and Beta Gamma Sigma, the national business honor society. Mr. Crutchfield's accomplishments have earned him a citation from the Small Business Administration and inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Finance and Business.

H. Todd Flemming '85

Prior to co-founding Infrasafe, Mr. Flemming served as president and CEO of Advantor Corporation in Orlando, Florida. He also serves as the President and CEO for Infrasafe, which is the parent company of Advantor Systems Corporation. Mr. Flemming serves as Chairman of the Friends of Adam Smith, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the free enterprise system. Mr. Flemming is a member of the BIPAC board of directors and is a member of the executive advisory board of the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council. Mr. Flemming has over twenty years of broad-based management experience in the security industry, including business start-up, design, marketing, strategy, research, development, and manufacturing.

 

Andy W. Freitas '92
President and Owner, Colonel's Limited LLC, Vienna, VA

Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney, Mr. Freitas and his father, who had just retired from the military (he was in charge of war plans during the Gulf War), became the first Papa John's franchisees in the Washington, D.C. area in Sterling, VA. Over the next eight years, Mr. Freitas and his father became the most successful Papa John's franchises in the world, while operating in one of the country's most competitive markets. Mr. Freitas operates 54 stores in the Greater DC metro area and has been named the national franchisee of the year.

 

H. Hiter Harris '83

Mr. Harris co-founded Harris William & Co. in 1991 as a national investment banking firm focusing on mergers and acquisitions. Under Mr. Harris' leadership, Harris Williams & Co. has become one of the largest and most influential mergers and acquisitions boutiques in the country. Having directed over 200 mergers  and acquisitions transactions during his career, Mr. Harris has worked extensively in the industries of consumer products, building products, industrial manufacturing, natural resources, retailing, media, and various services businesses. Mr. Harris earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, with Distinction, in 1987.

M. Peebles Harrison '89
Partner, Rose Harrison & Gilreath, P.C., Kill Devil Hills, NC

Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney College in 1989, Mr. Harrison attended Washington and Lee University School of Law, from where he graduated in 1992. Mr. Harrison concentrates his practice in residential real estate transactions, asset purchases, business acquisition and sales, corporate law and wage and hour claims and employment law. He serves as a member of the Law Council at Washington and Lee School of Law, the board of directors, Outer Banks YMCA, and the board of the OBX Bank.

The Honorable Dr. John Hillen
President and CEO, Sotera Defense Solutions, Inc., Herndon, VA

Dr. Hillen has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sotera Defense Solutions, Inc. since 2008.  Prior to joining the company and then taking it public in 2009, Dr. Hillen served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. Prior to that, Dr. Hillen was President of what is now CGI Federal Inc., a federal IT services company that is a subsidiary of CGI Inc., a Canadian IT services firm. Prior to that, Dr. Hillen led the defense and intelligence business at American Management Systems, Inc. which was sold to CACI International, Inc. in 2004. He also serves on the federal advisory commission for the U.S. Navy, having been appointed to that position by the Secretary of Defense in 2007.  A government contracting industry leader, Dr. Hillen is Vice Chairman of the Professional Services Council and is a 2011 recipient of the "Fed 100" award from Federal Computer Week magazine.

Mr. Kirk is the President and CEP of Associated Asphalt, Inc., in Roanoke, VA. He is on the board of YMCA of the Roanoke Valley, Art Museum of Western Virginia, Blue Ridge Public Television, and SunTrust, Western Virginia. He is a 1972 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.

 

Michael J. Krupin '69
Gilbert-Krupin, LLC,. Beverly Hills, CA

An entrepreneur at heart, Mr. Krupin left insurance carrier Provident Mutual (now Nationwide Insurance), where he was a top producer, to form Krupin Associates in Richmond, Virginia, in 1980. He quickly built a substantial practice that realized over $2 billion in life insurance policies in a short time period.  Given the opportunity to join forces with Dennis Gilbert, Mr. Krupin and his son, Bryan, moved to Beverly Hills in 1996 to form Gilbert-Krupin. Today, he serves clients throughout the country from the firm's Beverly Hills, Richmond and New York offices. Mr. Krupin is a 1969 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.

Mr. Mansfield began his career at Mansfield Oil Company in 1979 as manager of Pipeline Trading and Wholesale Marketing, headquartered in Houston, Texas. He was named President of the 100 store chain that spanned the southeastern United States. Mr. Mansfield now serves as CEO of Indigo Energy, part of the Indigo family of companies founded in 2000. He is a 1978 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.

Mr. McKittrick began his career with Coopers & Lybrand on their audit staff and where he became a certified public accountant. He has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Ethanex Energy since October 9, 2006. Before joining Ethanex, Mr. McKittrick was the principal of David J. McKittrick, LLC, a financial and management consulting business founded in 2003. Mr. McKittrick also serves as a member of the board of directors of Wellman, Inc., a NYSE chemical producer. He is a 1967 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.

Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney College in 1982, Mr. McPhillips attended the University of Virginia School of Law, from where he graduated in 1985. Mr. McPhillips is the Executive Vice President of Practice Management at Kaufman & Canoles. He has been consecutively named to the list of Best Lawyers in America since 1998. He was also named a fellow in the Virginia Law Foundation in 2011. He sits on the board of numerous foundations and organizations throughout Virginia.

 

W. Sheppard Miller, III '79

Mr. Miller is Chairman of the Board of KITCO Fiber Optics and is President and CEO of Light Tech Fiber Optics. Along with his work for Norfolk Housing and Redevelopment Authority as its Chairman, Mr. Miller also serves as Chairman of the Board of Hampton Roads Ventures, a for profit entity which secures and sells New Market Tax Credits in the southeastern United States. Miller also serves on the Mayor's Downtown Task Force, the Mayor's Commission on Homelessness, and the boards of the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and Monarch Bank's Norfolk Division. In addition, he is President of the Rotary Club of Norfolk for 2008-2009 and Chairman of HRBizPAC, the Hampton Roads Chamber's Political Action Committee. Mr. Pace serves as General Counsel to a number of successful companies, including a national credit company, one of the largest petroleum distributors in Virginia, an e-commerce company that provides services to prominent national companies, a developer of nursing homes and retirement/rehab centers, commercial real estate developers, private colleges and others.

Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney College, Mr. Payne attended The Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he became an adjunct professor. After joining the law firm of Hirschler Fleisher, where he is a shareholder, Mr. Payne's practice areas include corporate and general business law, public-private partnerships, zoning and land use, commercial real estate, and federal and state government relations. He is the founder of Rappahannock Area Business Leadership Program, and sits on the Board of Trustees of the George C. Marshall Foundation and the Rappahannock Economic Development Corporation. Mr. Payne is also active in his Pro Bono work to help build and strengthen the Fredericksburg community.

 

Myron L. Rolle
Professional Athlete, Pittsburgh Steelers, NFL

Mr. Rolle attended Florida State University, where he was a three-year starter on the football team, earning All-American honors in his final season. He received the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year. After completing his studies, he was drafted by the Tennessee Titans; he now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started the Myron L. Rolle Foundation in 2009, dedicated to the support of health, wellness, educational, and other charitable initiatives throughout the world  that benefit children and families in need.

A 1960 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, Mr. Saunders now works as a Financial Consultant with Wells Fargo Advisors. He currently serves as the Director/Advisor to the Virginia Air & Space Foundation, and the Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula Foundation.  Previously, Mr. Saunders has serves as Director of the Christopher Newport University Educational Foundation and as the Former Dinner Chairman of the National Conference of Community and Justice.

 

Gordon D. Schreck '65

Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney College in 1965, Mr. Schreck attended Princeton Theological Seminary and later the University of Virginia School of Law, from where he received his degree. As an attorney at Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, Mr. Schreck's practice focuses on admiralty and maritime matters of all types, including personal injury, cargo damage, collisions, charter party disputes, ocean and inland tugs and towing, marine insurance, recreational boating casualties, marine finance, and marine environmental pollution. Mr. Schreck heads the firm's Admiralty and Maritime Practice Group and is former chair of its Litigation Department. He is a permanent member of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference and has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America since 1989 and South Carolina Super Lawyers since its inception.

Upon graduating from Hampden-Sydney College in 1952, Dr. Schug attended the Medical College of Virginia. He practiced as an OB/GYN until his retirement. Dr. Schug is a trustee of the Schug Educational Foundation and an active volunteer of the Food Rescue of Charlotte.

 

Thaddeus R. Shelly III '75
CEO, Lazard Wealth Management LLC, New York, NY

Mr. Shelly leads all efforts working with wealthy family groups and individual investors in the management of their investable assets and is a member of the Investment Committee responsible for overseeing client portfolios. Prior to joining Lazard, Mr. Shelly was a Senior Managing Director at Bessemer Trust, overseeing client acquisition and account management for their Delaware Trust Company, Mid-Atlantic, South and Southeast regions. Before assuming his regional management responsibilities, Mr. Shelly successfully managed Bessemer's Washington, D.C. office while overseeing the firm's Equity Risk Management advisory services. Prior to joining Bessemer in 1998, Mr. Shelly was the Founder and Director of Private Client Services at Legg Mason from 1992 to 1998. He began his career at Goldman, Sachs & Co. from 1984 to 1992 where he provided investment advisory and brokerage services to institutional and wealthy individual investors. He is also a member of The Florida Council of 100, a business leadership organization of CEOs.

Anne M. Whittemore
