Yasmina Teza's Art
The Hampden-Sydney College Department of Fine Arts' spring production, Yasmina Reza's Art, premiered February 23 and will be repeated Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3. The English translation of Art won the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy of the Year after its premier at Wyndhams Theatre in London on October 15, 1996.
The plot of Art concerns three friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan, and the disastrous effect on their friendship that Serge's purchase of an expensive work of abstract art has. The painting is described by Marc as consisting of white lines on a white canvas. As the three friends debate over the value and meaning of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict intensifies to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.
The cast for Art includes Hampden-Sydney College students (left to right) Evan Nasteff '07, Drake Huzek '09, and Alex Mayberry '08. Technical direction and set design are by Brad Stoller and lighting by student David Sherman. Director Shirley Kagan is in her tenth year as a professor of theatre at Hampden-Sydney College.
Performances will be at 8 PM in Johns Auditorium. All shows are free and open to the public. For reservations or information, call (434) 223-6266.
