Visual Arts Major/Minor Requirements

BA Major in Visual Arts

A major in Visual Arts will require 34 hours.

Required: 12 hours of art history/philosophy of art to include

  • VISU 200 ART IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD (3)
  • VISU 202 HISTORY OF WESTERN ART II: RENAISSANCE TO MODERN (3)

and 6 hours from the following:

  • VISU 201 HISTORY OF WESTERN ART I: ANCIENT TO MEDIEVAL (3)
  • VISU 204 GREEK AND ROMAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE (3)
  • VISU 205 MEDIEVAL ART AND ARCHITECTURE (3)
  • VISU 208 WESTERN ART OF THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES (3)
  • VISU 210 AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY (3)
  • PHIL 218 PHILOSOPHY OF ART (3)
  • VISU 360 TOPICS IN ART HISTORY (3)

Required: 18 hours of studio art to include

  • VISU 220 COLOR AND TWO-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (3)

and 15 hours from the following: 

  • VISU 221 DRAWING I (3)
  • VISU 222 PAINTING I (3)
  • VISU 223 PHOTOGRAPHY I (3)
  • VISU 321 DRAWING II (3)
  • VISU 322 PAINTING II (3)
  • VISU 323 PHOTOGRAPHY II (3)
  • VISU 324 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (3)
  • VISU 325 PORTRAITURE (3)
  • VISU 361 TOPICS IN STUDIO ART (3)
  • THEA 401 THEATRE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (3)

Required: 4 hours for Senior Thesis

  • VISU 498 PRE-THESIS STUDY (1) fall semester of senior year 
  • VISU 499 SENIOR THESIS (3) spring semester of senior year   

Visual Arts minor

The requirements for a minor in the Visual Arts are 15 credit hours from the Visual Arts courses listed below, including at least one studio, one lecture, and two 300-level courses. 

Lecture courses should be chosen from the following:

Visual Arts 200 (Art in the Contemporary World), 
Visual Arts 201 (The History of Western Art I), 
Visual Arts 202 (The History of Western Art II), 
Visual Arts 204 (Greek and Roman Art and Architecture), 
Visual Arts 205 (Medieval Art and Architecture), 
Visual Arts 208 (Western Art of 19th and 20th Centuries), 
Visual Arts 210 (American Photography), 
Visual Arts 360 (Topics in Art History).

Studio courses should be chosen from the following:
