Summer Language Programs

Why does Hampden-Sydney College require students to study a foreign language? Studying foreign languages and cultures help us to reflect about our own culture, forces us to think in new ways, helps us better understand the English language, and foreign languages are a marketable experience that can provide you with distinct advantages in the job market.

For historians, a knowledge of languages is critical to developing a professional career. No country - not even the United States or United Kingdom - has a history written only in one language. The history of North America was written in French and Spanish, in the language of European, Asian and African immigrants and in the languages of Native Americans. Reading ability or fluency in other languages is thus critical to a historian's ability to read source materials, engage contemporary scholarship and write to a large (and increasingly international) audience.

The links below are to intensive summer language programs at other colleges.  Not only can these languages offer unique challenges, some are eligible for Boren grants and ROTC GO program grants. In addition, non-European languages are a valued commodity for the business world and for the intelligence community. These programs could be suitable for transfer of credit to Hampden-Sydney, but speak in advance with the Modern Languages department to verify if and how courses will transfer.

This list includes summer programs for 2014, last updated July 15, 2014.
