HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE conducts a five-week May Term starting one week after Commencement. One of its purposes is to provide students with an opportunity to take courses which are experimental in content or presentation, particularly those which require extensive time off campus. (See also May Term Abroad). These special summer courses carry regular academic credit. In addition, certain courses offered during the regular session are also offered during the May Term so that students can accelerate progress toward graduation, meet requirements ahead of schedule, or repeat courses. The maximum load that a student may carry during the May Term is two courses (with any corequisite laboratories).
Students who are in good standing at Hampden-Sydney or other colleges are eligible for admission to the May Term; those on academic suspension from Hampden-Sydney or another institution are not eligible. Admission to the May Term in no way assures admission to a degree program at Hampden-Sydney College.
Credits earned during the May Term are applicable to degree programs and are transferable to other institutions. For Hampden-Sydney students on academic probation at the end of the spring semester, grades and quality units for May Term courses have no effect on the probation until the completion of the subsequent semester. Acceptance of May Term credits by other institutions depends on the policy of those institutions.

Currently enrolled Hampden-Sydney College students should register on-line for May Term 2017 courses via the College's Tiger Web using their ID number and current PIN and also should complete a May Term 2017 Housing Application Form if they desire on-campus housing. (Note: Students registering for May Term 2017 abroad programs should do so on-line but coordinate with Dr. Daniella Widdows, Director of International Studies, about May Term abroad opportunities.) After logging into Tiger Web, use the "Course Search" area to select the term "2016-2017 Summer" and hit the "Search" button. You will then see a full list of May Term 2017 courses.
Students who are not enrolled at Hampden-Sydney may apply to attend May Term 2017 by completing this application form.

A student who recieves a grade of "Incomplete" for the spring semester, but who wishes to enroll in May Term, has until the fifth day of May Term to resolve the grade of "I." If the incomplete has not been resolved (i.e. a grade submitted by the professor to the registrar) by the fifth day of May Term (5:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017) the "I" is automatically converted to a grade of "F" on the student's transcript. Further, if the work completed and the resulting cumulative academic record warrants suspension, the student shall be withdrawn from any May Term courses in which he is enrolled.
Hampden-Sydney students who have been dismissed for academic reasons, or who are not in attendance during the spring semester of the academic year 2016-2017, must complete the reenrollment process and be accepted to Hampden-Sydney College as a regular student before they will be admitted to May Term. The application for reenrollment may be found via the College's Tiger Web using their ID number and current PIN and must be filed with the Office of Student Affairs by April 1, 2017. All on-campus May Term students must check-in at Parents and Friends Lounge (Venable Hall) on Monday, May 22, 2017, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Students should be prepared to finalize their schedules, arrange for housing, and pay all fees.

Students who choose to withdraw from the May Term must receive approval from the Director of May Term. To withdraw, a student must complete the proper forms and submit them to the Registrar. Withdrawal from a course or from the May Term does not guarantee a refund of fees paid.
A student who withdraws from a course on or before Wednesday, May 24, will receive no grade in that course. A student who withdraws from a course after May 24, but before the last five days of class, will receive a grade of "W." A student who withdraws from a course during the last five days of class will receive a grade of "WF" in that course. This applies to all the courses taken by a student who withdraws from the May Term.
Students who withdraw from on-campus May Term courses and residence halls, upon receiving appropriate approval, will forfeit May Term charges as follows:
Following registration, there is no refund of room and telecommunications charges. However, pro-rata refunds of board charges will be made. There is no refund of any charges for students who are suspended or expelled for disciplinary reasons. The Director of May Term may consider exceptions to these policies and grant pro-rata refunds under extenuating circumstances, e.g., death, medical reasons, military obligations.

10 Week Virtual Class Refund Policy
There are no refunds of technology fees.
The College will attempt to offer all the courses listed. Insufficient enrollment, however, or other factors beyond the College's control may dictate schedule changes.
Courses will be taught on the following schedule Monday through Friday during May Term:
"A" period 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
"B" period 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
"C" period 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
"D" period 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
All rules and regulations of the College, in particular the Honor Code and residence hall regulations, apply during May Term.
Students, who participate in a language immersion program, must live in College-owned housing. They are further required to participate in board plan. Because added events and tutoring provided by the program, students must also pay $350 non-refundable fee in addition to the cost for course credits. Room assignments are made on a first come-first served basis at May Term check-in by the Director of Residence Life; however, because immersion students are expected to live on the same hall with one another and to eat meals together, any roommate requests must be with other immersion students. The College reserves the right to change room assignments and to require residents to move to different accommodations if the College deems it expedient. Residents must furnish their own blankets, linens, towels and soap.

All May Term students in residence anywhere on campus must participate in the board plan. The plan includes Monday dinner through Friday lunch during the week of May 22 and Sunday dinner through Friday lunch for the remaining weeks of May Term.
All motor vehicles must be registered with the Campus Security Office ($15 charge for anyone whose car was not registered with H-SC during the 2016-2017 year). Cars already registered during 2016-2017 will keep the same stickers. A fine of $30 will be assessed for students who fail to register their cars.
The zone parking plan will not be used during May Term; however, all other parking regulations will be in effect (see Motor Vehicle Regulations section of The Key).
The Center for Counseling and Career Services provides students with a wide range of counseling and other services. The Center will make referrals to other offices on and off campus when necessary.
The College Campus Store will be open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. throughout the May Term 2017.
The atmosphere at Hampden-Sydney during May term is quiet and relaxed. However, students may also find exciting recreational opportunities on campus, most of which are free. The Tiger Inn, Hampden-Sydney's student union, will be open nightly. This facility is equipped with ping-pong tables, pool tables, and dart boards, as well as a large screen television. Athletic facilities on campus include a fitness center and weight-lifting room, swimming pool, handball and racquetball courts, basketball courts, softball fields, and tennis courts.
