Coordinator and Academic Advisor: Dr. Ed Lowry, Assistant Professor of Biology
This Community is focused on current developments in biological techniques as they affect agriculture, health sciences, and industry. Students will be enrolled together in a laboratory section of a core-curriculum course in Biology (BIOL 151: Principles of Biology) where they will examine how biology helps shape the plants and animals we grow and live with, how biology methods can be used to understand diseases like cancer and influenza, and how biology impacts the foods we eat and drink. Outside of class, students will explore the natural world near and far afield from Hampden-Sydney, to see living examples of unique biological creatures hidden in our forests and growing in our fields. We will also visit with speakers and alumni who are using new biological applications in the living world.
