Biology 261- Evolutionary Ecology (4 credits): A field-based study of the casual relationship between Darwinian ecology and evolution, examining the principal evolutionary and ecological mechanisms leading to the biodiversity, typically in tropical biomes. Using diverse terrestrial and marine ecosystems as living laboratories, the course explores the dynamic interface of biogeography, behavioral ecology, and physiological ecology to investigate means by which organisms adapt to their physical habitat and the other species that live there, both in historical and modern contexts. Prerequisites: Biology 110 and 151
History 285- Ecuador in the Big Picture (3 credits): The course will take advantage of our location in Ecuador to explore Ecuador's significant role in the larger history of Latin America. Ecuador was an early Andean cultural center, an Incan outpost, and was deeply and directly impacted by the European conquest. Quito became an important colonial city and since independence (liberated by Bolivar himself) the country has gone through all of the vicissitudes of national development, both frustrations and successes. We will study Ecuador agaisnt the backdrop of Latin American history and will visit sites and museums that will bring that history alive.
