Departmental Honors Application Requirements
The Honors Council encourages students to explore the possibility of honors research and independent study by discussing possible project topics with a professor whose professional interests the student shares and with whom the student will be comfortable working. For the specific requirements for honors work in a particular department, students should ask the department chair or the Honors Council chair.
The Honors Council places three overall requirements on candidates for departmental honors:
- The student must have demonstrated a minimum level of scholarly achievement, as indicated by an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 and a major g.p.a. of at least 3.3.
- The honors work must lead to a written report or paper describing the project and its results or findings. This paper is expected to meet the standards of scholarly writing appropriate to the department in which the work is done. Two bound copies of the report (as well as an abstract of the project, in electronic form), must be submitted to the Honors Council.
- Each candidate for departmental honors must make a public presentation of the honors work at the annual spring Departmental Honors Symposium.
