Senior Fellowship Timetable

For Applicants: April 19, 2013

Applications are due from juniors wishing to apply for Senior Fellowships. Applications will include a detailed description of the project and letters of support from a faculty member who will advise the project and from the chair(s) of the department(s) of the student's major(s). Members of the Honors Council will evaluate the applications.

For Current Fellows:

Wednesday, December 4, 2012: Submit to your committee a written report describing the work you've completed to this point. Append an annotated bibliography that charts your reading, as well as any other appropriate materials (papers, journals, research reports) that you've completed in the course of the semester.

Friday, April 5, 2013: Deadline for submission to your supervisory committee of a full draft of your senior fellowship paper together with a bibliography of sources. All committee members receive unbound copies.

Tuesday, April 16/Thursday, April 18: Formal presentation of your research to the college community (30 - 40 minute presentations and 10 - 20 minutes of questions).

Monday, April 22: Deadline for submission of final bound copies of your Senior Fellowship project.  Submit one bound copy to the Honors Council, c/o Dr. Vitale.   In addition, submit (unbound) copies to each member of your supervisory committee.

Progress of Senior Fellowship Projects:

JUNIOR YEAR: 

April
The Honors Council recommends that the President appoint as Senior Fellows those students, if any, who meet the standards of the Program. The President sends out letters of appointment.

By the end of April the director of the Honors Program, in consultation with the student, the student's major department(s), and the Honors Council, will appoint the student's advisory committee. The student will draft, in consultation with his advisory committee, a detailed plan for the year to come.

May-August
Ordinarily, the newly appointed Senior Fellow will undertake a Student Summer Research project, with appropriate grant support, so as to begin work on some preliminary aspects of his fellowship project. His work will be governed by the same standards that apply to other students undertaking summer projects.

SENIOR YEAR:

Late August:
The Senior Fellow meets with his advisory committee to review and possibly revise his project and his timetable of obligations.

September, October, November:
The Fellow meets at least once each month with his advisory committee to discuss progress and to discuss his work to date.

The Fellow meets regularly with his advisor throughout the semester to discuss the project and to ensure progress.

December:
By no later than the first study day after classes end, the Fellow and his advisor must submit to the Honors Council written reports describing the work completed to that point, appending the annotated bibliography that charts the student's reading, as well as other appropriate materials (papers, journals, research reports) the fellow has completed in the course of the semester.

During the exam period the full advisory committee will meet to evaluate the reports, consult with the Fellow to determine the depth and quality of his work, and determine continuation or termination of the project. If the Fellow gives sufficient evidence that he will successfully complete the project by April, he will be continued in the program; otherwise, his appointment as a Senior Fellow will be revoked.

The committee will assign grades at this time; the advisor will report the grade(s) to the Director of the Honors Program who will submit the grade(s) to the registar's office.

January, February, March:
The Fellow meets at least once each month with his advisory committee to discuss progress.

March, April:
The Fellow submits a final, extensive report of the year's work, appending the complete annotated bibliography and copies of all written work produced during the year.

The advisory committee meets to evaluate the work and to request revisions if necessary.

In April the fellows make a public presentation of their work to the academic community. These presentations will be scheduled during the convocation hour (11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday or Thursday). Each Senior Fellow will be allotted one hour for his presentation (40 minutes for formal exposition, 20 minutes for questions and answers).

The final bound report is submitted:

  • Each Senior Fellow must submit two bound copies, as well as an electronic copy, of his project to the Honors Council.
  • After the student has typed and copied his project, he should bring it to the Publications Office in the basement of Winston Hall. He will be instructed there in how to affix covers and a plastic spine to his report. The Publications Office will provide the materials for a modest charge; each student will provide the necessary labor. A student should expect to spend as much as two hours (depending on his level of expertise) in preparing his copies.
  • The Honors Council will not accept papers that have not been properly bound.
  • All projects must be typed in standard manuscript form (double spaced, one-inch margins on all four sides). Pages should be numbered. The form and documentation of the manuscript should conform to standards expected in the discipline or disciplines of the student's work.
  • Senior Fellows are expected to present work that has been researched and written carefully. Senior Fellowship projects that are carelessly researched and argued or sloppily edited and proofread will not be approved for receipt of honors.

Once the Senior Fellow has completed these requirements, the advisory committee will meet to evaluate his work and assign semester grades.

The chair of the Honors Council will inform the Dean, the President, and the Registrar of the student's accomplishments. Successful completion of a Senior Fellowship will result in the following designation on the graduation program: Senior Fellow-Honors in X and Y.
