Rhetoric Course Guidelines

The faculty resolution on rhetoric reads simply and clearly: "All Hampden-Sydney graduates will write competently." Designed to help students begin to meet this requirement, Rhetoric 100 is a one-semester preparatory course for the regular Rhetoric 101-102 sequence. A two-course sequence in rhetoric, Rhetoric 101 and 102, is the first part of this requirement. Rhetoric 101 will focus on the basic skills of effective writing--from basic sentence patterns through paragraph development to the preparation of an effective paper. Rhetoric 102 will focus on the study and composition of the essay and on techniques of research.
