Three year, Full Time Visiting Assistant Professor in Rhetoric (Public Speaking Composition) and Associate Director of the Ferguson Center for Public Speaking, with possibility for contract renewal
Hampden-Sydney College invites applications for a three year, full time Visiting Assistant Professor in Rhetoric, beginning in August 2016, to teach courses in both public speaking (primary responsibility) and composition and to serve as a faculty tutor and administrator in the Ferguson Center for Public Speaking. Qualifications include college teaching experience and a degree in Rhetoric, Rhetorical Studies, Rhetoric and Communication, Rhetoric and Public Address, or related field; PhD preferred, but we will consider candidates with an MA or ABD.
The successful candidate will teach seven courses per year: 1) five classroom sections with maximum enrollments of fourteen students per section, in beginning and advanced public speaking and occasional courses in written composition, as well as an occasional course in rhetorical history and theory; 2) two course equivalents as the Associate Director of the Ferguson Center for Public Speaking. Duties of the Associate Director include tutoring six hours per week, assisting in student tutors' training & evaluation, and developing and leading workshops for faculty across disciplines. Expertise in Speaking (and/orWriting) in the Disciplines, experience teaching in a liberal arts college, and experience in the use of instructional technology in the teaching of oral rhetoric preferred (such as knowledge of e-portfolios in the public speaking classroom).
