Faculty Professional Travel SupportHampden-Sydney College understands the importance of faculty participation in the national/international conversations of the disciplines. To facilitate scholarship through participation in national/international meetings, the College provides an annual professional travel allowance to each faculty member ($800 for 2011-2012) for attending professional meetings in his or her discipline. Faculty members may use this allowance for one national/international meeting or spread it among two or more regional meetings. Department/Program chairs oversee professional travel reimbursement for the faculty in their departments/programs. Faculty members should contact their chairs for further information.
If a faculty scholar wishes to attend meetings beyond those supported by departmental/program budgets, the faculty member may request additional funding from the Dean of the Faculty. In considering such requests the Dean looks for evidence of active scholarly participation in the meeting to be attended (e.g, presenting a paper, chairing a session, or performing duties as an organization officer). Depending on available funds, the Dean may underwrite the trip fully or partially. Faculty members requesting additional professional travel funds should contact the Dean.
The College also supports faculty professional development in the areas of pedagogy and academic administration. Faculty members wishing to attend workshops in these areas should contact the Dean of the Faculty.
