Entrance Requirements & Student Statistics

  • Prospective students are expected to have mastered a solid, demanding college-preparatory program before entering Hampden-Sydney, including at least
    • four units of English
    • two units of one foreign language
    • three units of mathematics (Algebra I & II and Geometry)
    • two units of natural science (one of which must be a laboratory course) and
    • one unit of social science 

In addition, a third unit of foreign language and a fourth unit of mathematics are recommended

  • SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT 
  • Mid 50%: SAT 1020-1220, ACT 21-27
  • GPA: 3.0-3.8

Admissions Plans

  • Early and Regular Decision Plans

Early Decision Plan

  • Candidates whose first choice of colleges is Hampden-Sydney should apply under the Early Decision Plan. Application forms must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by November 15. Admissions decisions are mailed 14 business days from the completion of your application. If a student is accepted under the Early Decision Plan, he is expected to confirm his enrollment in the College by January 15 and not submit applications to any other colleges.

Early Action Plan

  • Candidates who submit their application to the Office of Admissions by December 15 and January 15 will be notified of the Committee's decision 14 business days from the completion of their application.
  • Accepted applicants are expected to confirm their place in the incoming class by
    May 1.

Regular Admission Plan

  • Candidates choosing the Regular Admission Plan should submit their application to the College as early as possible in their senior year.
  • Hampden-Sydney's application deadline is March 1. Students are notified of the Committee's admission decisions 14 business days from the completion of their application..
  • Accepted applicants are expected to confirm their place in the incoming class by
    May 1.

Early Admission Plan

  • Hampden-Sydney recognizes that some students with records of superior academic achievement and promise may require fewer than the usual four years of secondary school to prepare for college. Under the Early Admission Plan, qualified candidates whose credentials are received by July 1 of their junior year will receive an acceptance or deferment no later than July 31. Campus Interviews

  • Candidates considering Hampden-Sydney College are strongly encouraged and, in some cases, may be required to visit the campus for a personal interview. Students conduct tours of the campus. Conferences with professors and/or coaches can be arranged. Requests for appointments should be directed to the Admissions Office at (434) 223-6120.
  • The Office is open year-round from 9:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday.  A map, with complete instructions for visitors, will be sent if sufficient notice is given.

Costs And Financial Aid for 2016-2017 Academic Year

  • Tuition and Fees: $42,368
  • Room and Board: $14,316 (estimate for double occupancy dormroom, unlimited meal plan, and technology fee)
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for need-based grants and loans

Directions To The Campus

Hampden-Sydney is six miles south of Farmville, Virginia, on U.S. 15. Turn west at State Route 133, bear right onto Route 692, and drive for one mile. The Admissions Office is in Graham Hall, at the center of campus.
