Jarrod Ficklin '11
Production Assistant, ESPN
An English major and Rhetoric Minor, Jarrod's voice was well known at H-SC athletic events. He was the public address announcer for home football, basketball, and baseball games, calling more than 100 events. He also provided color commentary for Tiger Football and Basketball games. Jarrod honed his reporting skills as sports editor for The Tiger, and by interning at WDBJ7 in Roanoke, VA. At ESPN, Jarrod started as a Statistics Associate and is now part of ESPN's Content Associate Program, a rotational program targeted towards identifying and developing the next leaders at ESPN. His main duties involve creating highlights for SportsCenter.
J.D. Jordan '99
User Experience and Visual Design Consultant, Slalom Consulting
J.D. graduated with a major in History and was very active in the Union-Philanthropic Literary Society, HSC theatre, the Fine Arts department, and a study abroad program at the University of St. Andrews. After graduation, he jumped into the emerging field of interactive design and soon established his own interactive agency, Cloudjammer Studio, with fellow HSC alum, R. Fleming Patterson '00. Constantly on the hunt for creative outlets, J.D. also spent several years teaching at the Atlanta College of Art and the University of Georgia--and at the latter stopped long enough to get a Masters in the US in Middle Eastern History. Now solidly back in the interactive design market, J.D. has worked for a number of Atlanta-based agencies and consultancies where he continues to use his wide-ranging education and interests to inform his work.
Shaun Irving '97
Principal, Orrio Strategic Marketing
At Hampden-Sydney, Shaun served as Editor of The Kaleidoscope yearbook, Co-Editor of The Garnet literary magazine, Chairman of the Board of Student Publications, and President of the Jongleurs. His H-SC experience prepared him for work as both a copywriter and an art director at various advertising agencies, where he worked on projects for the NCAA and Capital One. Shaun is the principal of Orrio, a college admissions marketing firm in Richmond, Virginia.
Jonathan Mackler '93

As a creative director at TBWA\Chiat\Day NY for the past three years, Jonathan has run many of the agency's high-profile accounts - Skittles, Starburst, Jameson Irish Whiskey and Vonage. He has also lead projects for McDonald's and Hotels.com. Mackler and his group created the "Legendary tales of John Jameson" campaign, brought sound quality to life for Vonage via "friend's head as phone" technology, continued Skittles' long-running "Taste the Rainbow" campaign in the U.S. as well as launched it in Europe, and finally, for Starburst, taught a dog how to stick his butt out of a car window. Before joining TBWA, Mackler worked at The Martin Agency, Wieden & Kennedy and BBDO, where he produced work for FedEx, Guinness, Timberland, ESPN, Nike, Saab, Snickers and Hyundai. Jonathan's work has won awards from all of the major shows, including Cannes, The One Show, Communication Arts, D&AD, The Andys, The Clios, The Kelly's, The Art Directors Club and the MOMA's AICP show. His FedEx Super Bowl commercial also won the Emmy Award for Best Commercial in 2006. Jonathan received a B.A. at Hampden-Sydney College, where he majored in managerial economics.
Lane Foard '92

After refining his design craftsmanship in Hampden-Sydney's publications department (including work on Widespread Panic and Dave Matthews Band concert posters) and his writing as a Classics major, Lane Foard '92 headed to the West Coast where he has worked as a writer for advertising and design agencies including Wieden+Kennedy, Goodby Silverstein and Sandstrom Design, giving a copy voice to brands such as Nike, Starbucks, MINI and ESPN. Currently, Lane is the Creative Director of Copy for iPhone and iPod at Apple, Inc. On the side, he maintains a line of subtly hilarious and borderline inappropriate greeting cards called Squibnocket, which has a cult following in boutique greeting card circles (yes, they exist).

My hampden-sydney liberal arts education was a damn good time and the social aspects of the school prepared me for a career in communications. my grades were not very good, but i did finally graduate- phew. i still miss walker's chicken fried steak and the long legs at longwood.
as a copywriter and later creative director, i have worked in various international creative-driven advertising agencies for various global brands. i wrote "impossible is nothing" for Adidas and various other communications for other brands. and to think it all began as a gig at the tiger newspaper in the advertising department.
i currently am founder and chief boom-bah at tripe storytelling, a brand storytelling company based on a farm outside amsterdam, the netherlands. i am proof that you can get kicked out of college, weasel your way back in, squeak by and just barely get that diploma-and against all odds manage to find a career.
Bob Pullum '87

Bob has always been enamored with design and advertising, so he was constantly seeking ways to express that creativity at Hampden-Sydney through working on the Kaleidoscope, making fliers for his fraternity (Sigma Chi), and designing posters in the Publications Office, even while he was an Economics major. Bob has been with AKQA since 1994. His prior experience includes stints at Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Hal Riney & Partners, and Wieden & Kennedy. During his tenure at AKQA, he has worked on such clients as Nike, Kraft and Banana Republic. He's currently overseeing all digital marketing efforts for Audi and Visa. His work has been recognized in British Design & Art Direction, Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, Communication Arts, The One Show, The Clios, New York Art Director's Club and the New York Festivals.
Phillip Wilson '86
Freelance Creative Director
A History major at Hampden-Sydney, Philip was drawn to advertising after graduation. He worked for several of the world's largest global networks including Leo Burnett, DDB and McCann-Erickson/Prague. He has been nationally and internationally recognized for his creative work. While living in the Czech Republic, Philip took a hiatus from advertising and was Creator and Executive Producer of the country's first reality TV show, which ran successfully for three seasons. He now resides in Washington, D.C. as a freelance creative director.
Christopher Apostle '85

At Hampden-Sydney, Christopher studied Greek, Latin and Humanities. After finishing college, he thought about teaching Greek, but instead decided to take a year off. After that year, Christopher enrolled in Sotheby's Works of Art course in London to learn the art of connoisseurship. After the course in London, Sotheby's asked Christopher to begin working as a trainee in the Old Masters department in their New York office, the blue chip department of the art world, where he remains to this day. Christopher's work is a combination of art and business, where he finds treasures with the intention of getting the best possible price for them.
Will "Toby" Usnik '85

Toby earned a B. A. in History and French from Hampden-Sydney and began his career in international education, eventually transitioning to a position in the private sector at American Express, where he rose to director of international public affairs before being recruited to global head of digital consultancy for Razorfish. In 2001, he joined the New York Times Company, where he served as their executive director of public relations for five years. In 2006, he joined the 250-year-old Christie's auction house. In his current role, Toby oversees communications globally for the 5.7 billion dollar firm.
The Martin Agency
Founded in 1965 by David Martin '52, the Martin Agency is one of America's leading ad agencies and was recognized as Adweek's US Agency of the Year in 2009. One of its early campaigns, "Virginia is for Lovers," continues to be successful today. Other well-known campaigns include GEICO's "Rhetorical Questions" and Walmart's "Yodelling Cat," and their portfolio includes accounts with Comcast, Discover, Mentos, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
