Preparing for a Career in Service
Some people would rather not move immediately into a job after graduation, but they also want to pursue a productive opportunity to learn and contribute to society. For individuals like this, there are many post-grad service opportunities that should be considered. These opportunities range from education, service, and religion to more creative options. Below we've listed a few of the most recognized opportunities, and we encourage you to take a closer look at those that are interesting to you.
- Teach for America (TFA) - A highly competitive and well-respected two-year program which places recent graduates in low-income high schools around the country
The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) - A year-long program which places recent American college graduates in schools, from elementary school through high school level, in Japan
CIEE Teach Abroad - A year-long program which places university graduates to teach English and immerse themselves in a foreign community in seven countries around the world
City Year - An education-focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for 10 months of working to improve high school and middle school student attendance, behavior and course performance in English and math, with the ultimate goal being to keep students in school and on track to graduation
Peace Corps - A federal program which places trained volunteers in countries around the world to help individuals build better lives for themselves, their children, and their communities
AmeriCorps (VISTA) - A full-time year-long program at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, where volunteers fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and generally strive to bring individuals and communities out of poverty
Code for America (CfA) - An 11-month program that connects talented programmers to problems faced by major U.S. cities face and allows the recent graduates to create web-based solutions
The Fellows Initiative - An intense, practical nine-month journey that prepares recent graduates to live faithfully by facilitating a part-time professional internship in their field of interest, theological coursework, Biblical study, mentoring, and service
Focus Leadership Institute (FLI) - A one-semester journey of study through the hows and whys of the Christian faith for student leaders from both Christian and non-religious universities hosted at Focus on the Family's Colorado Springs campus
Student Ministry Campus Intern - Many college ministries have programs which place interns to mentor students on campuses around the country. While you should pursue options at whichever ministry you're most passionate about, the RUF program is an exemplary, well-developed, two-year initiative.
Oscar Meyer Wienermobile Driver - Drivers, referred to as "Hotdoggers," represent Oscar Meyer as a goodwill ambassador through appearances on radio and television stations; newspaper interviews; and visits to grocery stores and charity functions. They work with professionals in the fields of consumer promotion, marketing and sales; help organize promotions and even pitch TV, radio and print media.
