What are Fellowships?

Fellowships and Scholarships are competitive awards for graduate study, personal enrichment, travel, and research while you're still at the undergraduate level.  These awards recognize excellence, initiative, and a drive to make an impact in the world.  You can see that Hampden-Sydney men have done very well in competing for these awards, so we encourage you to stretch your goals and aspirations and represent Hampden-Sydney on a national and international stage!

The awards are sorted by when students are eligible to begin applying for them, NOT by when you should start considering them.  Fellowships require several months of planning an application, let alone the time it takes to build a competitive candidacy.

Most of these programs either have deadlines in early to mid October, or in February or March.  Visit with Dr. Frye and Ms. Snyder early, preferably in your sophomore year.  If that's not possible, visit as soon as you begin to think seriously about any of these programs.  Ms. Snyder can explain the various opportunities, help you decide which ones match with your interest, and give you advice on how to plan for an application.  Dr. Frye can assist you with building, writing, and revising a personal statement.  He can also assist in crafting all parts of your application.
