Hampden-Sydney students network and dine with alumnus Dr. David West '81, practicing physician at Chesapeake Internists, at PDI 2016
Each January, just prior to classes resuming, the Career Education Office hosts the Professional Development Institute. The PDI is a 2-day event in which students participate in a variety of professional development activities, including a recruiter panel, industry roundtables, breakout sessions, a formal dinner, keynote speakers, and networking with Hampden-Sydney alumni, peers, and friends of the College.
" I thoroughly enjoyed the industry round-table discussion segment. I was able to speak with professionals from sales and insurance, as well as some from consulting and management. It was good to hear the professionals' backgrounds in order to gain a better understanding of what path I need to take in order to gain entry into such an industry.
All of the sessions were incredibly useful and relevant. I thought the whole day was very well thought out and organized. The material taught was not only useful, but it was taught in a professional and entertaining atmosphere."
-Todd Edstrom '16, PDI 2016
"I learned far more about the perspectives of interviewers and potential employers, while gaining insight into several different career possibilities."
-Reuben Retnam '17, PDI 2016
"I would recommend others to participate [in the PDI] because it's really hard to know where to start and what steps to take in planning your future without some formal guidance."
-Kyle Hart '16, PDI 2015
"The Professional Development Institute was a great experience. I will carry many of the lessons I learned in those two days for the rest of my life. The program had a great mix of different aspects of life after college. Meeting alumni, learning business etiquette, and learning how to build your personal brand were just a few of the valuable parts PDI had to offer. It definitely got me thinking about my career and I have had a different level of focus ever since."
