Study Abroad Scholarships

SEMESTER ABROAD, H-SC MAY TERM ABROAD, and VA PROGRAM at OXFORD STUDENTS: Scholarships from external organizations, such as those on this page, will be considered for application to your H-SC account on a case-by-case basis, up to the amount of H-SC's fees.  Students are advised to consult with the Financial Aid and Student Accounts offices.

NON-H-SC AFFILIATED SUMMER ABROAD STUDENTS
: Costs for non-H-SC-affiliated summer programs are billed directly to the student by the program provider.  Scholarships from external organizations, such as those listed on this page, will not be applied to your H-SC account.  Students are advised to consult with the Financial Aid and Student Accounts offices.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY SCHOLARSHIPS
Department of Classics Study Abroad Scholarship Hampden-Sydney College awards this scholarship to students in the Department of Classics to participate in programs conducted in Italy, Greece, and other countries with considerable ancient ruins.  Preference is first given to students of the Greek and/or Latin languages and then to students of English language courses on ancient topics, such as ancient history and Classical Studies. Application Due:  Considered on a rolling basis.

H-SC Study Abroad Blogging Award Selected students will be given a stipend of $600.00 in return for emailing blog entries about their life abroad to the Office of Global Education & Study Abroad while they are in their host country. Application Due:  November 15 (spring programs); April 15 (fall/summer programs)

H-SC Passport Fee Fund Students who apply for a passport in order to attend an endorsed semester abroad program are eligible to apply for a reimbursement of the passport application fee.  Summer abroad students may also apply, funds permitting.  Application Due:  November 15 (spring programs); April 15 (fall/full-year/summer programs)

Paule Kline Scholarship for Study in France This award reflects Madame Kline's love for the College and teaching and is meant to foster a better understanding of and appreciation for French language and culture.  Academic record, demonstrated financial need, and participation at the French Table are criteria for selection.  Applicants are also judged on the content of a paper they must submit to the Chair of the Modern Languages Department explaining why they wish to study in France.  First preference will be given to a French major who plans to live with a French family with children of the same age. COUNTRY OR LANGUAGE-SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is for selected students studying at overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages. CLS institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Students may apply for one language, and will be placed at institute sites based on language evaluations after selection. Application Due:  November 16, 2017 (summer programs)

DAAD Scholarship (Germany) Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Freeman-Asia (most countries in East or Southeast Asia) A Freeman-ASIA Award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.  Awards are given for each semester.  Contact Dr. Varholy with the Fellowship Advising Office for inquiries. Application Due:  March 1, 2017 (summer programs); April 4, 2017 (fall/full-year programs); TBA (spring programs)

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers three Special Summer Program schoarships for US citizens to come to the UK.  These summer programs provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), who have completed no more than two years of university study, to come to the UK on a four, five or six week academic and cultural summer program. Contact Dr. Varholy with the Fellowship Advising Office for inquiries. Application Due:  varies by scholarship (summer programs)

Japan Bridging Scholarship Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. Application Due:  April 1, 2017 (fall/full-year programs); October TBA (spring programs)

London School of Economics General Course Scholarships These scholarships are worth £7,000 each and students from the United States are eligible to apply. Scholarships will be allocated on the basis of both need and merit.  Application Due:  June 1, 2017 (full-year program)

NSEP African Languages Initiative (for Boren Fellowship Applicants) This initiative will offer Boren Scholarship and Fellowship applicants the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of, and proficiency in, African languages and cultures.  They seek applicants who are interested in studying Bambara, Swahili, Yoruba, or Zulu, and will give preference to applicants with prior exposure to the respective language.  Contact Dr. Varholy with the Fellowship Advising Office for inquiries. Application Due: January 15, 2018

Schwarzman Scholars Program in China The 200 scholars chosen annually for this highly selective program will work towards a one-year Master's Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing-one of China's most prestigious universities. As individuals who want to have a positive impact on the world, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Scholars will be selected based on their academic credentials, extracurricular interests and leadership potential. Sullivan Scholarship (Prague, Rome, Ralleigh programs in July or August) Created by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation and a Board of Advisors from renowned universities, the Sullivan SE Certificate develops students' entrepreneurship and leadership skills to prepare them to be change agents in their communities and professional careers. You can combine courses through Leadership exchange with courses at your home campus to complete the minor.  Application Due: TBA (summer programs)

MERIT AND DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship The Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kind of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not limited to: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. Application Due: October TBA (spring programs); March 7, 2017 (fall/full-year programs; summer programs)

Boren Undergraduate Scholarship Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Fulbright U.S. Student Program for Graduating Seniors Through a competitive application process, the Fulbright Commission offers seniors and recent alumni opportunities for an ETA (English Teaching Assistantship), or research grant.  Grants available in a variety of countries with financial coverage.  Contact Dr. Varholy with the Fellowship Advising Office for inquiries.  Application Due: early September (H-SC deadline); October (Fulbright deadline)
