UVA in Southern Africa: People, Culture, and Environment of Southern Africa

It is an exciting and significant time in history to visit South Africa. As apartheid policies and perspectives dissolve, South Africa emerges as a society with renewed vitality and international significance.
This course focuses on anthropogenic impacts on the environment and environmental contributions to the development of people and cultures in South Africa and Mozambique. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the "community role in education and sustainable development." Students will have a unique opportunity to gain insight in to linkages between people's lives and their environments, investigating both people's impacts upon their surroundings and the ways in which environment constrains and empowers personal choices.
