Brinkley Challenge
Launched in 2000 to honor Hampden-Sydney legend and iconic Professor of Classics, John Luster Brinkley '59, The Brinkley
Challenge is an annual giving competition between the graduating classes of the last decade. What are Brinkley Challenge points?
Increasing giving participation and increasing the dollar amount of class gifts are the major goals of the Brinkley Challenge, so we award points based on rankings in each of these categories. However, the deck is stacked against the younger guys, whose classes are larger and incomes a bit smaller. In order to even the playing field we include four categories: giving participation, class gift amount, change in participation over the previous year, and change in class gift amount.
It's just like golf, you want the lowest score. You want your class to be ranked number one in each field, so a perfect score is 4, which means your class 1) had the highest giving participation 2) made the largest gift 3) had the greatest increase in participation and 4) had the greatest increase in the class gift sum.
Here's how the scoreboard looked on June 30, 2012 for the close of Fiscal Year 2012.

The 2012 Brinkley Challenge Raising Cane award was presented to James Darling '10 who received the award on Willis Davis's behalf.
