Alex Abbott '17 was selected to be a recipient of the Fulbright UK Summer Institute grant. Selection requires that the recipients be young American student leaders with a high level of academic achievement. Alex will have the opportunity to study at the University of Bristol in a four-week program on "Slavery and the Atlantic Heritage".
This program is designed to enhance leadership skills and develop academic knowledge of Bristol and the UK's role in American history. Participants will become ambassadors for studying in the United Kingdom and for the prestigious internationally renowned University of Bristol. Students will not only learn in the classroom, but they will also have the chance to become immersed in the culture by visit the Parliament and mayor of Bristol, take tours of historic pirate cities, and attending a cricket match.
Alex, an Allan Scholar, is active in the Wilson Center Freshman Leadership Program. He is also a writer for the student-run newspaper The Tiger. He is a graduate of Davie County Early College High School (Winston-Salem, NC) and is the son of Angi Terpenning and Chuck Abbott.
