Tim Shen '12 attended the NOLS Pacific Northwest Sea kayaking and Sailing course during the summer of 2010, a month-long course in British Columbia.
For the sailing section of the expedition he learned the basics of sailing, sail theory, coastal navigation, and boat maintenance. He was also responsible for plotting courses and choosing destinations. On the kayaking section he learned many different kayak maneuvers, strokes, and forms of rescue from a kayak. All along the way through both sections of the expedition he received valuable leadership training, skills in leaving no trace while camping, and environmental ethics.
Tim found out about NOLS through other students at H-SC that have attended in the past. From their testimony about NOLS and from that of others outside of the HSC community, "It was obvious that NOLS was a great source of outdoor education and leadership training."
Tim is the president of the Fly Fishing Club and the secretary for the club Water Polo Team.
