Dr. Howard Named African American Trailblazer

February 26, 2010

On February 25, at the Library of Virginia, President Christopher Howard was honored as one of the 2010 African American Trailblazers in Virginia History.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Howard quoted Sir Isaac Newton, "I can see so far because I stand on shoulders of giants," and looking at his fellow Trailblazers, "they are before me tonight."   He particularly addressed State Senator Henry L. Marsh III, who litigated the cases connected with reopening and integration of the schools in Prince Edward County, "I know that there is a direct connection between the day Barbara Johns led her fellow students out of Moton High School and my standing here as President of Hampden-Sydney College."

Prior to the evening ceremony Dr. Howard spoke at Richmond Community High School and Franklin Military Academy.   Dr. Howard's inspirational talk was "Eight Ways to Accelerate Your Leadership Odyssey."

Dr. Howard with Tarik  D. Gay, a senior at Richmond Community who has been accepted Hampden-Sydney.
