Seven Honored at Opening Convocation

On August 25, seven of Hampden-Sydney's top students were honored with various awards at Opening Convocation.  The awards were presented by President Christopher Howard.

Carter & HowardRyan Martin Carter, a junior, received both the President's Award for Scholarship and Character and the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award, First Honor.   The President's Award for Scholarship and Character is presented to a junior who has excelled in the classroom at Hampden-Sydney and who also demonstrates the quality of character that enriches the life of the campus community.  The Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award recognizes juniors for their intellectual achievement and good citizenship. 

A Davis Fellow, Ryan plays catcher and outfield for the varsity baseball team and is a Resident Advisor.  He is a member of the Society of '91 (leadership program) and the Minority Student Union.  He was recognized as a student leader in the 2011 edition of Who's Who Among Students in Universities and Colleges and was the recipient of the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award at Final Convocation in April 2011.  An economics & commerce and psychology major, Ryan is a graduate of Thomas Dale High School and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Carter of Chester, VA.

Best and HowardWilliam Burke Best, a senior, received the President's Award for Overall Academic Excellence.    

An Allan Scholar, Burke plays varsity lacrosse and is a member of the Pre-Health Society and the social fraternity Kappa Sigma.  He was the recipient of the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award at Final Convocation in April 2011.  A biology major, Burke is a graduate of Norfolk Academy and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Best of Virginia Beach, VA.

Griggs and HowardChristopher Hunt Griggs,a senior at Hampden-Sydney College, received the President's Award for Academic Excellence in Humanities.    

A Venable Scholar, Christopher served as Editor of The Garnet 2011, the student literary magazine, and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Jongleurs (theatre arts).  He is a member of the honorary societies Phi Beta Kappa(academics) and the Society for College Journalists as well as the French Club and Unity Alliance.  An English major, Christopher is a graduate of Park View Senior High School and is the son of Ron & Irma Griggs of South Hill, VA.

Clark and HowardDesRaj McCree Clark, a senior, received the President's Award for Academic Excellence in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

An Allan Scholar, Raj serves as a Student Court Investigator.  He is a member of the Pre-Health Society, the President's Men, the Rugby Club, the Venture Club, and the national honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics) and Chi Beta Phi (science).  In May 2010 Raj received the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award; at Opening Convocation in August 2010, he received the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta KappaAward; and at Final Convocation in April 2011, he received the H.B. Overcash Award.  A biology major, Raj is a graduate of George Washington High School and is the son of Drs. Donovan & Kanchan Clark of Danville, VA.

Rose and HowardFrank Robert Rose, a senior, received the President's Award for Academic Excellence in Social Sciences.

A Patrick Henry Scholar, Frank is a member of the Garnet & Grey Society (Admissions Office tour guide), the Rugby Club, the Venture Club, and the honor society Phi Beta Kappa (academics).  A psychology major, Frank is a graduate of Gloucester High School and is the son of Dr. & Mrs. Vincent Rose of Gloucester, VA.

Cartwright and HowardAlexander Chase Cartwright, a junior, received the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award, Second Honor.  

A Madison Scholar, Alex serves as a member of the Student Court, as President of the Pre-Law Society, and as Vice-Chair of Good Men Good Citizens.  He is also Vice President of both the Student Advocates for Hopeful Politics and the Spanish Club and is Treasurer of the College Republicans. He is the Opinion Editor for the student newspaper, The Hampden-Sydney Tiger, and is a member of the  national honor society, the Society for Collegiate Journalists. A mathematical economics and government major, Alex is a graduate of Westfield School and is the son of Bob & Mindy Cartwright of Howard, GA.

Price and HowardDonophan C. Price III,a sophomore at Hampden-Sydney College, received the Omicron Delta Kappa Award.   The ODK Award was established in 1974 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Lambda Circle and has been endowed by generous contributions from ODK alumni.  It is presented annually to a member of the sophomore class who demonstrated real leadership in his freshman year. 

A Venable Scholar, Trey serves as a Resident Advisor and a Student Court Investigator.  He is a member of the Pre-Law Society, Habitat for Humanity, Student Advocates for Hopeful Politics, and the professional scientific society Alpha Chi Sigma.  Trey is a graduate of Northgate High School and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Donophan C. Price II of Newnan, GA.
