H-SC Receives $1 Million for Fine Arts Center

January 05, 2012

The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation has awarded Hampden-Sydney College a $1,000,000 grant to assist in the creation of a fine arts center.

The Foundation's commitment, over four years, is a significant lead gift to the College's efforts to develop its growing Fine Arts program.  Carpenter's gift will also allow the College to leverage funds and stimulate other contributions to the vital project.

"This foundational gift will enable us to provide a state-of-the-art facility for students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community," said Hampden-Sydney President Dr. Christopher B. Howard.  "The Foundation's generosity and foresight will ensure the College educates its students in the arts, creativity, innovation, and design, critical elements of a vibrant liberal arts education for men in the 21st Century."

The Carpenter Foundation was established by E. Rhodes Carpenter, a member of Hampden-Sydney College's Class of 1929, and his wife, Leona Bowman Day Carpenter.
