Toby Usnik '85On Monday, March 26, Toby Usnik of Christie's International Auction House in New York City, presented "A Career Conversation: Do the Arts Fit into your Future" at Hampden-Sydney College.  Christie's is a name that speaks of extraordinary art, unparalleled service, and expertise. Founded in 1766 by James Christie, Christie's conducted the greatest auctions of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and today remains a popular showcase for the unique and the beautiful.   

Usnik, H-SC Class of 1985, was named Senior Vice President and Head of Communications at Christie's Inc. in August 2007.  As head of Christie's global communications staff, Usnik works closely with key specialist departments and management to ensure that Christie's continues to be recognized as the world's leading art business.  This includes responsibility for media relations, public relations, crisis communications, and support for employee communications.  His department also supports and Christie's related businesses, including great estates, education, financial services, and shipping and storage. 

Usnik joined Christie's in May 2006 as Vice President, Public Relations, Christie's Americas.  Previously, he was Executive Director of Public Relations for The New York Times Company. 

Prior to joining the Times Company, Usnik was the Director of Global Communications at Razorfish, a firm specializing in digital technology consulting services.  From 1993 to 1999 he worked for American Express as director of international public affairs. 

Usnik received a B.A. degree in history and French in 1985 from Hampden-Sydney College, an M.S. degree in university administration in 1988 from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M. Phil. in international and comparative education from Columbia University in 1992.  He was a Fulbright Scholar to Belgium from 1990-1991 and a member of the Coro Foundation's Leadership New York in 1997.  He is past president of the Public Relations Society - New York, a member of the Wisemen Group, The Seminar, and the International Association of Business Communicators, all corporate communications professional associations.
