Judd McAdams '77 of Charlotte, North Carolina, was honored at Homecoming 2013 for his long and faithful service to the College. During half-time of the football game, he was presented with the Alumni Citation, the highest honor the National Alumni Association of Hampden-Sydney College bestows, by Hampden-Sydney President Chris Howard and Alumni Association President Bill Howard ’77
This award is presented each year to an alumnus in recognition of his outstanding support of Hampden-Sydney College and his community. The Citation recognizes contributions of volunteer service to the College, financial commitments to the future of the institution, and a lifetime of service exemplary of the College’s mission to "form good men and good citizens.”
These qualities are perfectly embodied in this year’s honoree, E. Judson "Judd” McAdams. Judd graduated in 1977 with a degree in history and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He and his wife, Mary Lynne, have four children, two of whom—sons Judson, Class of 2004, and Scott, Class of 2007—have continued the Hampden-Sydney legacy. Judd and Lynne have two grandchildren, Tripp and Eliza.
After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, Judd first worked as a municipal bond trader. In 1982, he began what would become a thirty-year career in commercial real estate development that has him working today as a Partner in RED Partners, LLC.
As a good man and good citizen, Judd is an active member of his community, volunteering at the YMCA’s Camp Thunderbird and serving on its Board of Managers. He also serves as President of the Liturgical Committee at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte.
Anyone who knows Judd knows that he is a Hampden-Sydney Man and knows that he will do anything for his alma mater and her alumni. As a loyal volunteer and long-time member of the Society of Founders, Judd has given an abundance of time, talent, and treasure to Hampden-Sydney College. From 2007-2009, he served as the President of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, and he was recently elected to the newly formed Board of Directors of the Alumni Association.
The Hampden-Sydney Club of Charlotte would not be as strong as it is today without years of hard work and dedication from Judd McAdams. Judd served as President of the Charlotte Club for nearly three decades, hosting countless alumni and admissions events at his home and in his office building. If there was an alumni function happening in Charlotte—anything from phonathons for the Hampden-Sydney Fund to backyard barbecues and formal events—Judd was there to make it happen.
"Judd’s record of service to the College is extraordinary,” said H-SC Vice President for Institutional Advancement Lee King ’94. "He and Lynne have hosted countless admissions events in their home, and as the alumni leader in Charlotte, Judd has helped to connect generations of Hampden-Sydney alumni to their neighbors in Charlotte and also to the College. The impact of his leadership as a Founder and as a President of the Alumni Association cannot be quantified—the College will reap the benefits of his good work for decades to come.
