On Tuesday, December 9, the Hampden-Sydney American Acoustic Music Series presents Wayne Henderson and Friends. Henderson will be playing with old time fiddler and folk singer, Helen White.
Henderson has played at Carnegie Hall and in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and is well-known for designing and producing guitars and mandolins. Helen White is the founder and served, from February 2000 - July 2014, as Executive Director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Program which introduces mountain children to their musical heritage.
Wayne and Helen have been playing as a duo and as part of stringbands together for about twenty years. Their performances as a duo have led them to events sponsored by the National Center for Traditonal Arts, the Presidential Inaugural Folk Festival, the Vancouver International Folk Festival. They have also played at events sponsored by the BCMA (Birthplace of Country Music Association) in Bristol, Tennessee, the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Conventions in Nashville, Tennessee, and Issoudun, France and many local and regional festivals in the southeastern US. In the spring of 2000 they were sponsored in tour of Holland and Germany by the European World of Bluegrass Festival with subsequent privately sponsored tours in France, Germany and Switzerland in 2008, 2011 and 2014. In November 2006 they were featured performers on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion..
The performance is free and open to the public and begins at 7:00 PM in the Tiger Inn. This series is part of Hampden-Sydney's continuing commitment to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the Southside community.
