Hampden-Sydney College was saddened to learn that Sweet Briar College will be closing its doors August 25.
Since Sweet Briar's opening in 1901, generations of Hampden-Sydney students, faculty, and staff have formed personal and professional relationships with their counterparts at the women's liberal arts college.
A wide range of educational options is the strength of American higher education. With the closing of Sweet Briar College, those options have been diminished. Every institution of higher education - small college, large university, private, public, liberal arts, technical, coeducational, single-sex - contributes to the American educational mosaic, which is unique in the world.
Hampden-Sydney College is proud to be a vigorous and vibrant part of that mosaic. For more than two hundred years, the College has unwaveringly and successfully fulfilled its founding mission "to form good men and good citizens." Secure in the present and confident in the future, Hampden-Sydney will continue to do so.
