On January 18, Kirk Rohle '12 was honored with the NCAA's Award of Valor as part of the annual NCAA Honors Celebration in Dallas. The award is given to a collegiate athlete who shows courageous action and noteworthy bravery. It has only been given out 14 times in the last 38 years.
"Rohle, a running back, followed offensive lineman Rogers for years as he cleared paths and created gaps for Rohle to dart through. On Jan. 25, 2012, Rohle darted faster than ever - and this time it was Rohle who made sure Rogers knew where to go. The student residence that the pair shared caught fire in the middle of the night, and when all of the inhabitants had exited to safety, Rohle realized Rogers was still inside. Rohle stormed back into the house, and suffered severe burns trying to save his friend. Both would be able to escape." - NBC 12
The first story on Rohle and Rogers by Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter Randy Hallmann (H-SC '70) was voted overall top story and the top news story of 2012 by Times-Dispatch readers. Hallman's follow-up story: "H-SC pair moves on after fire ordeal"
