Howards Visit with Wynton Marsalis

February 08, 2013

President and Mrs. Howard attended a Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra concert in Dallas, TX, recently headlined by their friend and award-winning musician, Wynton Marsalis. Marsalis and Howard discussed Hampden-Sydney's plans to renovate the Fine Arts Building, Winston Hall. President Howard invited the artist to play a concert when funds had been raised and the building renovations were complete. Marsalis happily agreed as long as the acoustics were improved, because according to him, "halls are notoriously bad for acoustics." Dr. Howard and Marsalis also spoke about their mutual friend, award winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, who was a keynote speaker at H-SC two years ago.
