Opening Convocation

Henry and HowardOn Thursday, August 26, Opening Convocation marked the beginning of Hampden-Sydney's 235th academic year.  The 315 freshmen gathered immediately before the ceremony for their class picture.  The faculty and senior class marched in an academic procession.

The Convocation Address was given by Dr. Peter Blair Henry, Dean of the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.  Dr. Henry and Dr. Howard were a Rhodes Scholars together at Oxford University.

President Christopher Howard announced that J. Colbert Lucey '11 had been appointed a Senior Fellow of the College and will undertake an ambitious program of independent study during this academic year.  Colbert thereby joins the select and highly successful group of 26 Senior Fellows the College has had since 1997.

Dr. Howard swore in the members of the Student Court, Student Court, and the Student Government Officers:
