Architectural Society Constitution


In order to excite and satisfy architectural interests among the Hampden-Sydney student body and community, in order to provide philanthropic services to its surrounding communities by working alongside existing service oriented groups, in order to prepare students for a career in the field of architecture and equip them with a basic knowledge of architectural concepts for further education in said subject, we, the students interested in such a society, do establish this constitution.


The name of this organization shall be the Archtectural Society.


The membership of this organization shall consist of any student of Hampden-Sydney College or any member of its community that expresses a sincere desire in such a society and maintains a regular attendance, and is conferred by its existing officers a status of membership. Membership can also be revoked when it is evident that someone has no longer been attending meetings and/or causes repeated unnecessary disruptions during meetings. In order to stay in good standing, a member must not miss more than three meetings per semester or his or her memebership may be revoked by a majority vote of the existing body of memebers.


Officers shall be elected by the society with respect to their interest, attendence, and involvement outside of regular meetings. Officers are elected by the group of official members whom hold elections at the end of the spring semester for the following school year. Each candidate must be a member of the Architectural Society in order to be considered for this position. The positions are as follows:

The President is a position usually achieved by one who has expressed a sincere desire in the advancement of architecture. The duty of the president is to organize weekly meetings, contact speakers, set up field trips, facilitate in workshops, and lead whatever activity has been planned for the week, assuring that the meetings and events are running efficiently. The President is also repsonsible for holding elections, handling impeachment or delegation, unless it is the president being impeached or replaced.

The Vice President is a position that aids the president when any responsibility has proven to be too much for him. Jobs will frequently be delegated to him as he works alongside the president for every event. The Vice President shall participate in officer elections, advise the president, send letters of appreciation to the speakers, serve as liaison for visiting guests and speakers, and keeping the society in good standing with the comunity and any architectural contact. The Vice President shall assist in impeachment of any officer, if the occasion arises, unless it is he who is being impeached or replaced.

The Record Keeper is a position where the duties of a secretary and treasurer are combined. The Record Keeper is to be repsonsible for recording a brief date, description, and conclusion of each event, field trip, or meeting. The Record Keeper of the Society shall also keep a budget for the Society. Staying in close communication with the President and Vice President, the Record Keeper will record expenses and report them to the Student Finance Committee. The Record Keeper also takes part in the replacement of another officer and helps facilitate the end of year elections.


Impeachment shall occur when any one officer is not fulfilling his prescribed duties and it is evident to the body of memebers. In order to remove any officer, a vote must be cast where there is a super majority (3/5ths) in favor of removal.


The Architecture Society shall be under the direction, when needed of a lecturer in the Fine Arts. He or she will serve as a faculty advisor, aiding in the logistics of events scheduled for the Architectural Society.


The constitution of the Architectural Society is subject to being amended at any time. The procedure of such an amendment should go as such: If any article of the constitution proves unnecessary or inappropriate, an amendment must be proposed by a member and sponsored by an existing officer. The amendment must be proposed in its most complete form at one meeting, decided on at the end of that same meeting, and voted on at the next meeting with time to debate on the proposed amendment prior to casting a vote.
