The College fields NCAA Division III teams in 8 intercollegiate sports.
ARTICLE I - Name
The name of the organization shall be The Garnet, The Hampden-Sydney Magazine, hereafter referred to as the "Garnet."
ARTICLE II - Mission
The Garnet, continuing the mission of The Hampden-Sydney Magazine (established in 1859), is the showcase for the best student literary and artistic talent. It is obligated to seek the finest poems, short stories, essays, photographs, and other creative work by students. Works by non-student authors, such as community members or alumni, may also be considered. Works by authors not part of the College community are normally not published.
ARTICLE III - Editorial Policy
Section 1. Editorial policy is solely in the hands of the Editor.
Section 2. Editorial policy must be consistent with the standards established in Article IV of the Constitution of the Board of Publications.
Section 3. Editorial policy is subject to the review of the Advisor and Board of Publications under Section III of the Board of Publications By-Laws.
ARTICLE IV - Goals
Section 1. The Garnet strives always to be graphically pleasing and in conformity with accepted standards of artistic expression and good journalism.
Section 2. The Garnet strives to publish in the 1st and 2nd Semester of each academic year.
ARTICLE V - Functions
Section 1. The Garnet is published twice each academic year.
Section 2. The Garnet publishes poems, short stories, essays, photographs, and other creative work.
ARTICLE VI - Officers
Section 1. The Editor is elected in March by the Board of Publications from applications received by the Chairman of the Board of Publications in February.
Section 2. The Editor serves until publication of both editions.
Section 3. The Editor receives a stipend from the Board of Publications so long as the Board deems the performance of his duties to be satisfactory. The stipend is paid upon publication of each edition.
Section 4. If the Editor so desires, an Assistant Editor is elected in March by the Board of Publications from nominations by the Editor.
Section 5. The Assistant Editor serves until the publication of both editions
Section 6. The Assistant Editor receives a stipend from the Board of Publications so long as the Editor-in-Chief and the Board deem the performance of his duties to be satisfactory. The stipend is paid upon publication of each edition.
Section 7. All other members of the staff are appointed by the Editor and are responsible to him for the satisfactory performance of their duties.
ARTICLE VII - Advisor
Section 1. The Garnet will have a faculty or staff Advisor appointed by the President of the College from nominations by the Editor and the Board of Publications.
Section 2. The Advisor will serve for a term of two years.
Section 3. The Advisor is responsible for providing guidance to the staff of the Garnet in order to assure that the book is published on schedule and in compliance with the standards established in this Constitution and by the Board of Publications.
Section 4. The Advisor must approve every page of the book before it is sent to the
printer. The Advisor must approve all changes.
Section 4. If the Advisor believes that the Editor is not fulfilling his duties satisfactorily, he/she should inform him and the Board of Publications.
ARTICLE VIII - Finances
Sections 1. The Garnet will cover operating expenses from the Student Finance Committee allocation.
Section 2. Finances are the responsibility of the Editor in conjunction with the Advisor and the Board of Publications Financial Advisor.
Section 5. The Garnet will bank with the College, which provides monthly statements of deposits and expenses.
ARTICLE IX - Amendments
This Constitution may be amended by a majority Board of Publications with each member having for this purpose an equal vote.
