Constitution

 

ARTICLE I - Name

The name of the organization shall be The Kaleidoscope of Hampden-Sydney College, hereafter referred to as the "Kaleidoscope."

ARTICLE II - Mission

The Kaleidoscope, established in 1893, is a record through pictures and words of the life, activities, and major events of an academic year or in the case of a "Senior Edition" the four years of a graduating class.  It is a valuable and essential historical record for the College.  It demands a high level of accuracy and completeness.

ARTICLE III - Editorial Policy

Section 1.  Editorial policy is solely in the hands of the Editor.

Section 2.  Editorial policy must be consistent with the standards established in Article IV of the Constitution of the Board of Publications.

Section 3. Editorial policy is subject to the review of the Advisor and Board of Publications under Section III of the Board of Publications By-Laws.

ARTICLE IV - Goals

Section 1. The Kaleidoscope strives always to be factually accurate, graphically pleasing, and in conformity with accepted standards of good journalism.

Section 2.  The Kaleidoscope strives to publish in the summer of the designated year with distribution the following fall.

ARTICLE V - Officers

Section 1.  The Editor is elected in March by the Board of Publications from applications received by the Chairman of the Board of Publications in February.

Section  2.  The Editor serves until publication of the book.

Section 3.  The Editor receives a stipend from the Board of Publications so long as the Board deems the performance of his duties to be satisfactory.  The stipend is paid after the final proofs have been returned to the printer.

Section 4.  If the Editor so desires, an Assistant Editor is elected in March by the Board of Publications from nominations by the Editor.

Section 5.  The Assistant Editor serves until the publication of the book.

Section 6.  The Assistant Editor receives a stipend from the Board of Publications so long as the Editor and the Board deem the performance of his duties to be satisfactory.  The stipend is paid after the final proofs have been returned to the printer.

Section 7.  All other members of the staff are appointed by the Editor and are responsible to him for the satisfactory performance of their duties.

ARTICLE VI - Advisor

Section 1.  The Kaleidoscope will have a faculty or staff Advisor appointed by the President of the College from nominations by the Editor and the Board of Publications.

Section 2.  The Advisor will serve until the final proofs have been returned to the printer.

Section 3.  The Advisor is responsible for providing guidance to the staff of the Kaleidoscope in order to assure that the book is published on schedule and in compliance with the standards established in this Constitution and by the Board of Publications.

Section 4. The Advisor must approve every page of the book before it is sent to the

printer. The Advisor must approve all changes.

Section 4.  If the Advisor believes that the Editor is not fulfilling his duties satisfactorily, he/she should inform him and the Board of Publications.

ARTICLE VII - Finances

Sections 1. The Kaleidoscope will cover operating expenses from the Student Finance Committee allocation.

Section 2. Finances are the responsibility of the Editor in conjunction with the Advisor and the Board of Publications Financial Advisor.

Section 5.  The Kaleidoscope will bank with the College, which provides monthly statements of deposits and expenses.

ARTICLE VIII - Amendments

This Constitution may be amended by a majority Board of Publications with each member having for this purpose an equal vote.
