The Outsiders Club has been an organization that has been affiliated with Hampden-Sydney College since the early 1970’s. For over four decades this club has allowed the Hampden-Sydney community to “go out into the wild.” This club is iconic of the Hampden-Sydney persona that we as a community of southern gentlemen seek to uphold. The Outdoors Club provides students who are interested in the great outdoors an outlet to engage in male camaraderie. We, the members of the Outsiders Club, feel that this club is a key component of the Hampden-Sydney experience. The club participates in numerous hiking, fishing, canoeing, climbing, etc. activities. This club both upholds the values of Hampden-Sydney College and provides fun activities for those whom are interested in the "Great Outdoors."
The name of this organization shall be the Outsiders’ Club.
The membership of this organization shall consist of any student of Hampden-Sydney College or any member of its community that expresses a sincere desire to engage in the outdoors and maintains a regular attendance and is conferred by its existing officers to a status of membership. Membership can also be revoked when it is evident that someone has no longer been attending meetings.
Officers shall be elected by the society with respect to their interest, attendance, and involvement in and outside of regular meetings. Officers are elected by the group of official members whom hold elections at the end of each spring semester for the following school year. Each candidate must be a member of the Outsiders’ Club in order to be considered for this position. The positions are as follows:
The President is a position usually achieved by one who has expressed a sincere desire in the outdoors. The duty of the President is to organize weekly meetings, set up trips, deliberate upon officer task, and assure that meetings and events run efficiently. The President is also responsible for holding elections and handling impeachment or delegation unless it is the President who is being impeached or replaced.
The Vice President is a position that aids the President when any responsibility is further required. Jobs will frequently be delegated to him as he works alongside the President for each event. The Vice President shall participate in officer elections, advise the President, and keep the club in good standing within the college community. The Vice President shall assist in impeachment of any officer unless it is he who is being impeached or replaced.
The Secretary/Treasurer is to be responsible for recording date, a brief description of each event, trip, or meeting. He shall also keep the record of the club’s budget. Staying in close communication with the President and Vice President the Secretary/Treasurer shall also record expenses and report them to the Student Finance Committee.
Impeachment shall occur when any one officer is not fulfilling his prescribed duties and it is evident to the body of members. In order to remove any officer a super-majority (three-fifths) vote must be cast in favor of removal.
The constitution of the Outsiders’ Club is subject to being amended at any time. The procedure of such an amendment shall go as such: if any article of the constitution proves unnecessary or inappropriate an amendment must be proposed by a member and sponsored by an existing officer. The amendment must be proposed in its most complete form decided on at the end of that same meeting and voted on at the next meeting with time to debate the proposed amendment prior to casting a vote. (Three-fifths)
