Orientation 2012 Schedule, Saturday August 25

OFFICE HOURS

8 am - 2 pm - Computing Center
9 am - 4 pm - Bookstore
9:30 am - 4:30 pm - Bortz Library
10 am - 1 pm - Post Office
1 - 5 pm - Fitness Center

   

8:30 am - 11:30 am - Matriculation for all New Students (F)(T), Kirk Athletic Center (Snyder Hall)  

Students should bring a pen, their vehicle registration and license plate number. Students whose accounts are not current should be prepared to pay the Business Office (contact Mrs. Cindy Jones, 434-223-6223, with questions regarding payment of tuition and fees).  Here they will officially check in, pick up room keys, verify Business Office information, receive the student handbook and other important information, review health forms, and register cars, bikes, and guns for hunting (no handguns of any type are permitted).  They may also meet with a representative from the Financial Aid Office.  (The process should take 15-20 minutes, depending upon how many students arrive at one time.)

8:30 am - 11:30 am -Reception for Families and Friends, Kirk Athletic Center (Snyder Hall)  

Family members will have the opportunity to meet College officials and faculty members and to talk informally over refreshments while their new student completes the matriculation process.

8:30 am - 1:30 pm - Residence Halls Open for Move-In of New Students (F) (T)

All residential students should report to their assigned housing following matriculation.  There they will meet their Resident Advisors and check into their rooms. 

8:30 am - 1:30 pm - Computing Center and Shentel Tents, Carpenter Residence Halls Lawn

The Computing Center Staff will assist students with their technical needs during move-in.  Free Ethernet and Cable TV cords, as well as Room Phone Request forms, will be available.  Students may also sign up at the Shentel tent for enhanced cable and internet service.

8:30 am - 2 pm - Student IDs and Microsoft Office Installation, Computing Center

Staff will be in the Computing Center to make IDs for Students who do not already have an ID. (Also, the Computing Center will make IDs for students any day from 8:30am - 5 pm). Room Phone Request forms will also be available.

11:00 am - 11:30 am - Honors Program Parent Information Session (for parents of honors scholars only), Board Room, Settle Hall

Parents of Patrick Henry, Venable & Allan Scholars: let your son continue unpacking while you hear important information relating to the Honors program and the conditions and requirements of maintaining an Honors scholarship.  Bring your questions and comments.

11:00 am - 12:30 pm - Lunch, Pannill Commons, Settle Hall

Students are welcome to eat their first meal in "The Commons." Guests may purchase lunch for $7.45 at the door.

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm - Welcome to New Students, Families, and Friends (F) (T), Venable Hall Front Lawn (Rain Site: Kirby Field House)

Hampden-Sydney College believes in promoting healthy minds and healthy bodies.  In this often humorous and always informative session, Dr. Linda Hancock talks about personal health, wellness, and safety within the context of the college experience.

Introduction to Academic Advising (F) (T)

Students and their family members will meet with advisors for a brief discussion of the role of the advisor and general academic requirements.  There will be an opportunity to ask questions about the academic program, and each student will sign up for an individual session with his advisor for Monday to discuss his specific academic plan.

4:15 pm - 5:15 pm - Parent Information Session: Opportunities and Expectations for H-SC Men, Kirk Athletic Center (Snyder Hall)

Parents are encouraged to participate in this session while students take advantage of some free time to unpack and meet fellow students.  College offices and programs that provide services to students will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.  Dr. Howard will speak on the expectations of a student at Hampden-Sydney College and communication with students and parents.  The Dean of Students will be available for questions regarding any part of student life at Hampden-Sydney College.

7:30 pm - 8:45 pm -Honor Code Small Group Sessions (F) (T), (Coat and Tie Required), Residence Halls

All new students should be in their rooms and ready to be picked up by their Resident Advisors for the Honor Code meetings no later than 7:20 pm.  From the small group sessions, students will head straight to the Honor Convocation at 8:45 pm.

The most important event during Orientation, the Honor Convocation will teach students what the Honor Code means at Hampden-Sydney.  At the conclusion of the event, every student will sign the Honor Code Pledge.  In addition, students will be formally welcomed into the Hampden-Sydney College Brotherhood of Men. 

10:15 pm - Hall Meetings with Resident Advisors (F) (T), Residence Halls

Students will meet with their hall mates and Resident Advisors to discuss community life in the residence hall and have questions answered.
