Alma MartinezWho created the Latino stereotype and why? Why are images of bandidos, maids and talking Chihuahuas offensive to the Latino community? Do film & TV have an obligation to defuse stereotypical images of Latinos?

Come hear the answers to these questions and more during Ms. Martinez's presentation. She will address some stereotypes and infuse every detail of her presentation with personal and insightful perspectives garnered from over 25 years in the entertainment business. Ms. Martinez is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of California , Santa Cruz and is a Ph.D. candidate in drama at Stanford University . Her area of research includes the intersection of Chicana/o political theater of the 60's and 70's with political theaters in Mexico and Latin America .

Sandra & Vladimir Dance Performance

Sandra Meythaler and Vladimir Espinoza are master performers and teachers in contemporary and folkloric dance from such countries as Spain, Mexico, France, and Cuba. They are currently touring together for the first time in the USA offering performances in Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Cha-Cha-Cha, Mambo and more.

Eileen Torres is bringing her critically acclaimed "Salsa Dance & Lecture/Performance" to the campus in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Ms. Torres' audience will enjoy a colorful and entertaining Salsa Dance exhibition and informal lecture on Hispanic heritage relating to art and entertainment. In addition to her performances, Ms. Torres is President of Salsation Productions and Publisher of Salsamundo.com, a web site dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Salsa music.
