A Civil Debate on Same-Sex Marriage
Is same-sex marriage good for society? As legislators and voters around the country grapple with whether and how to recognize same-sex relationships, the heated debate will be explored at Hampden-Sydney College on Thursday, October 20.John Corvino, philosopher, moralist, gay-rights advocate, and Glenn Stanton, family theorist, author, Christian and cultural apologist will bring clarity and civility to this debate. While Corvino and Stanton disagree on many issues, they share a profound commitment to reasoned dialogue and helping people understand the importance of these matters.
Sponsored by the Offices of Student Activities and Intercultural Affairs, the debate, free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 PM in Crawley Forum.
Glenn T. Stanton is the Senior Analyst for Marriage and Sexuality and the Director of Social Research and Cultural Affairs at Focus on the Family. Glenn has authored or contributed to nine books on the intersection of family and cutting social issue, including Why Marriage Matters: Reasons to Believe in Marriage in Postmodern Society and Marriage on Trial: The Case Against Same-Sex Marriage and Parenting. Glenn has been on television and serves as a consultant to the Bush Administration on increasing father involvement in the Head Start program.
John Corvino holds a PhD. In philosophy and teaches at Wayne State University, where he specializes in ethical theory and applied ethics. He is the editor of Same Sex: Debating the Ethics, Science, and Culture of Homosexuality. His articles and columns have appeared in numerous scholarly anthologies. His audiences have included professional organizations, the Lawrence Livermore National Research Laboratory, the National Institutes of Health, and several colleges and universities.
