Opening Convocation Speaker: The Honorable Maurice A. Jones '86
Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Commonwealth of Virginia
Maurice Jones was appointed Secretary of Commerce and Trade by Governor Terry McAuliffe in January 2014 to oversee the economic, community, and workforce development of the Commonwealth. The primary job of the Secretariat of Commerce and Trade is to utilize Virginia's assets to solidify its position as the preeminent place to live, work and conduct business.
Prior to his appointment, Secretary Jones served as Deputy Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); President of Pilot Media, the largest print and digital news and information organization based in Virginia; Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Social Services; and Deputy Chief of Staff to then-Virginia Governor Mark R. Warner.
Jones holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Hampden-Sydney College, a Master of Philosophy in International Relations from Oxford University in England, where he attended on a Rhodes scholarship, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. He is a native of Kenbridge, Virginia and currently resides in Norfolk.
Senior Class Speaker: Thad Shelly '75
Managing Director and Senior Advisor, Tiedemann Wealth Management, Jupiter, FL
With almost 30 years of investment experience, Mr. Shelly is Managing Director responsible for developing and maintaining client relationships and Senior Advisor for the Firm and its clients. Before joining Tiedemann in 2013, Mr. Shelly was a Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lazard Wealth Management LLC where he was responsible for leading the firm's efforts in working with wealthy family groups and individual investors in the management of their investable assets. Prior to joining Lazard, Mr. Shelly was a Senior Managing Director at Bessemer Trust, overseeing client acquisition and account management for their Delaware Trust Company, Mid-Atlantic, South and Southeast regions. Before assuming his regional management responsibilities, Mr. Shelly successfully managed Bessemer's Washington, D.C. office while overseeing the firm's Equity Risk Management advisory services. Prior to joining Bessemer in 1998, Mr. Shelly was the Founder and Director of Private Client Services at Legg Mason from 1992 to 1998. He began his career at Goldman, Sachs & Co. from 1984 to 1992 where he provided investment advisory and brokerage services to institutional and wealthy individual investors. He is also a member of The Florida Council of 100, a business leadership organization of CEOs.
Junior Class Speaker: Tulane Patterson ‘78
Founder and author, Lynchburg, VA
Mr. Tulane Patterson is a native of Lynchburg and a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, class of 1978. He also holds an MBA from Lynchburg College. In 1998, Mr. Patterson founded Generation Solutions, a home retirement and health care service company in Lynchburg and in Roanoke. Following that , he founded Generation Home Medical in 2005 and the Covenant Foundation, now Centra PACE, in 2001. Last year, he founded Christian Health Outreach, a not for profit third world health care health education ministry. Mr. Patterson has authored over a dozen published articles and two books and has served on the boards of several civic organizations such as the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club, the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, and the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of commerce. He is married with four daughters.
Sophomore Class Speaker: Andy Freitas '92
President and Owner, Colonel's Limited LLC, Vienna, VA
Upon graduation from Hampden-Sydney, Mr. Freitas and his father Bill, who had just retired from the military (his last position being that of Chief of Conventional War Plans J7 Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War), became the first Papa John's franchisees in the Washington, D.C. area in Sterling, VA. Over the last 19 years, Mr. Freitas and his father have become one of the most successful Papa John's franchises in the world, while operating in one of the country's most competitive markets. Mr. Freitas operates 55 stores in the Greater D.C. metro area and was named the National Franchisee of the Year in 2009 and became one of only five franchisees to be inducted into the Papa John's Hall of Fame in 2013.
Freshman Class Speaker: Tim Beatty '97
Principal, Heritage High School, Lynchburg, VA
During his junior year Tim began taking education courses at Longwood, which he completed during the fall semester after he graduated from Hampden-Sydney. Tim was a classroom teacher in several schools from 1998 to 2003. He completed his master's degree in educational leadership and supervision at Radford University in 2003, then became assistant principal at Heritage High School. He was promoted to Associate Principal in 2007, and was appointed as Heritage’s Principal by the Lynchburg City School Board in July of 2012.
