The Hampden-Sydney Host Family Program matches alumni, retired faculty and staff, and local families with students whose homes and families are far from our campus. Each year we are delighted to welcome students from other regions of the U.S. as well as international students from all over the world. Host families extend a hand of friendship and help students become acquainted with life in Southside Virginia.
Hosting a student from another region or culture can be a very rewarding experience. Our students live on campus and receive their meals through our dining services, but a host family can make a significant difference in a student's life. A host family might invite the student over for dinner or celebrate his birthday or some other holiday with him. Other suggested activities include going shopping, to a sporting event or to visit historic places of interest. While the College asks for a commitment of one semester, the relationship can last throughout the student's college career and beyond. It is also important to note that hosts are not responsible for the financial needs of students.
Being a Host Family can be a lot of fun and does not have to take up a lot of time. It gives families in the Southside area an opportunity to learn about other parts of the U.S. or about other cultures worldwide. Host families will be selected in early September, shortly after our students complete orientation.
