Motor Vehicles

Every student may have a motor vehicle (vehicle requiring a state license) at Hampden-Sydney, provided it is properly registered with Campus Security & Police and is operated in accordance with existing College rules and regulations.

Registration
It is mandatory that your vehicle be registered each year with the Department of Security and Police. You will be issued a decal with a registration number to affix to your vehicle. You must pick up your decal from the Security office or at matriculation.

Costs
The parking permit/registration fee is $210; it covers the entire year and applies to every student living on or off campus at the beginning of the first semester. No refund is made for any reason after the start of classes, even if a student elects not to bring his car back for the spring semester.
The parking/registration fee is only $105 for students who did not register a vehicle for the fall semester; announce in advance that they need only one semester to complete their graduation requirements; are participating in the Approved Off-Campus Study Program; or are attending second semester only.

Temporary Permits
For students who need to have a vehicle at the College for only a short time (e.g., a few weeks), the Campus Security & Police Office makes available a temporary permit, free of charge. The time limit for this permit is two weeks; students are allowed three per year, never in succession.

Operating Rules
The speed limit on non-state College roads and in parking areas (McFarland Lane, Kirby Field House Road, and the road leading to the Crawley Forum Area Residence Halls and the Hampden House units, and roads in the Whitehouse Hall and Carpenter Houses area) is 15 mph. The speed limits for state-College roads are posted.

Note: The sidewalk leading up to Venable Hall is not a roadway, nor are the sidewalks in front of Cushing Hall or around the Carpenter Halls.
