Counseling

The Hampden-Sydney College Counseling Center offers a range of counseling and mental health services to the College community.  The center is committed to enhancing the academic mission of the college through a variety of services.  Counseling Center staff welcome students who have diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and orientations.

If you are a student, you may be interested in individual, group or couples counseling.  Confidentiality concerning Counseling Center services is guaranteed, except in rare circumstances. You may want to look at our more detailed confidentiality statement.

For faculty, staff, parents and friends who are concerned about an individual student or an issue affecting mental health on campus, the Counseling Center is always available for consultation.  We often provide assistance to those concerned about the well-being of others as they consider how to respond and when to make a referral to the Counseling Center.

In addition,training and outreach services are provided to enhance the health of the campus community. 

During the academic year, crisis intervention and emergency services are always available. 

The Counseling Center also has a wealth of self-help information available, in the form of brochures, books, and other resources. A number of these self-help resources are available on-line from a variety of sources.  We often make referrals to other sources of help, assistance, and support  

We are always interested in your feedback about our services, our policies, our web page, or other issues affecting the Counseling Center. 

A disclaimer about electronic mail:  We discourage persons from contacting us via email regarding personal problems for various reasons.  The nature of email is such that its confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, nor do we find email communications as useful as in-depth, face-to-face contact.  Moreover, we cannot guarantee that we will read your email right away or, consequently, respond in a timely fashion.

Nevertheless, we do encourage you to contact us in whatever way you are comfortable, if the alternative is not to contact us at all.

The Student Care Committee is designed to identify a fellow student who may be struggling with any sort of health or wellness issue. Such issues may include mental health, physical health, substance use, stress, academics and any other area that may cause you to be concerned about his overall wellness.

By using this system, you are bringing this student to the attention of Nurse Beth Graham in the Student Health Services, Associate Dean Christa Fye in the office of Academic Success, Director Vincent Rose in the Wellnes Center, and Assistant Dean of Students Shawn White.
