The Virginia Tobacco Commission awarded $250,000 to Hampden-Sydney College toward creating a concept design and presentation materials for enlarging, renovating, and updating Gilmer Hall, the science building.
Hampden-Sydney was successful in obtaining its first grant from the Commission because of the match between the Commission's priorities to fund STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and the College's need for a new science facility.
The concept design is a crucial early step in the planning and fundraising for the capital project. It would make visible how the building would be arranged and function; it would help determine the costs of construction; and it would allow potential donors to judge how wise an investment they will be making in our College's science programming and facility. The process of creating the concept design is scheduled for January to December 2014.
