 Fitness Center General Policies

  • The Fitness Center is a controlled access facility.  Only authorized users are allowed entry and must enter through the front desk login.
  • Responsibility for general supervision of building, fitness area, and racquetball courts rests with the staff members and supervisors directly in charge of the activity or area.  Students provide primary supervision for the facility and act with the full authority of the Fitness Center Director.  Harassment or disregard of the directions provided by the staff will result in immediate removal from the facility and may result in additional disciplinary action.
  • Profane or indecent language is inappropriate.
  • Appropriate attire is necessary to gain access to the fitness center.  Shirts and shoes are required to be worn in all non-aquatic activity areas.  The College reserves the right to determine what constitutes appropriate attire.
  • The possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs (steroids, inhibitors, etc.) is not permitted.  The use of tobacco products including smokeless tobacco is not permitted in the building.
  • Food may not be consumed outside the lounge/vending area.  Beverages are permitted in the activity areas only if contained in a re sealable, non-glass container.
  • Legal dependents: To participate in activities at the Fitness Center, legal dependents must be 14 years of age or older. Legal dependents under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Legal dependents 13 years of age and under may not participate in Fitness Center activities. If they accompany a member, they may sit in the lounge/vending area. Exceptions to the age rules may be made on a case-by-case basis by the Fitness Center Director.
  • Animals are not permitted in the building.

Guest Participation:

  • All guests must be 18 years or older or be accompanied by a parent/guardian. 
  • Guests must register at the Fitness Center Front Desk and sign a waiver and guest agreement form.  All guests under 18 must have a parent/guardian sign the waiver form. 
  • All immediate family members of H-SC students, faculty & staff may access the fitness center at no additional charge.
  • H-SC students, faculty & staff may have one guest (non-family member) use the fitness center for free.  Any additional guests must pay $5 to access the facility. 
  • All Tiger Club members must pay $5 for each guest they bring to the fitness center.
  • Members must check in at the same time as the guest and remain in the facility the entire time the guest is there.
  • Members are responsible for their guest's actions.  If a guest fails to adhere to the policies of the Fitness Center, the guest and the member may be asked to leave.

Hampden-Sydney College students, faculty/staff, alumni, Trustees, and retired faculty/staff receive free access to Tiger Recreation.  Current Thompson Hospitality employees receive free access ONLY after employment is confirmed by Thompson Hospitality Management. 

Students: Must be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student of Hampden-Sydney College.  Students have unlimited use of the TigeRec facility during the summer.  Spouses of Hampden-Sydney College students are granted unlimited free membership.

Faculty/Staff: H-SC faculty & staff along with their spouses and legal dependants (see definition below) receive free access.  Part-time coaches and staff members also receive free access to the facility. 

Alumni: Alumni of Hampden-Sydney College living in the surrounding area receive free access to the facility. 

Trustees: Active and former Trustees along with their spouses and legal dependants (see definition below) receive free access to the facility.

Retired Hampden-Sydney College Faculty/Staff: Retired faculty/staff members along with their spouses receive free access to the facility.  "Retired employee" is defined for these purposes as someone who has retired at age 62 or older with at least 10 years of service. 

Thompson Hospitality employees:  Thompson Hospitality employees along with their spouses and legal dependants (see definition below) receive free access to the facility.

Tiger Club Community Memberships:
Tiger Club (community) memberships are available to the public on a 1-year and 6-month basis.  Both Single and Family Memberships are offered.  A Family Membership is classified by immediate family members only (i.e. spouse and legal dependants).  Below is a further explanation of our policies regarding legal dependants.

Legal dependents:  To participate in activities at the Fitness Center, legal dependents must be 14 years of age or older.  Legal dependents between 14 and 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Legal dependents 13 years of age and under may not participate in activities. If they accompany a member, they may sit in the lounge/vending area. Exceptions to the age rules may be made on a case-by-case basis by the Fitness Center Director.

There is an annual fee for the period of July 1 - June 30.  Six month memberships can also be purchased from July 1 - December 31st and January 1st - June 30th

Tiger Recreation does not provide day passes or monthly memberships.  Individuals who elect to join during other months of the year will receive a pro-rated membership applicable until the next renewal date. 

Payment may be made by cash or check payable at registration.  Checks can be made out to Hampden-Sydney College with application.

There are NO membership refunds!  The only item that may be refunded is money from the vending machines.  Inform the Director if a member needs to be refunded.  Only the Director & Assistant Director can refund money. 

Summer Swim Membership:
The Leggett Pool summer membership program is offered as a stand-alone product and can be purchased for $150.  This will accommodate individuals and families in the surrounding community who wish to join the pool only.  The Summer Swim Membership runs from May 13th - August 19th each summer.

Lockers are available in the men’s and women’s locker rooms in the fitness center as well as the women’s locker room in the pool area.  They may be used on a daily basis or rented on a six-month basis for $25* or year basis for $50*.  All members who wish to use lockers (daily or rented) are required to provide their personal lock.  Locks may not remain on lockers overnight unless the locker is rented.  Items left overnight in non-rented lockers will be discarded.  Hampden-Sydney College is not responsible for any items left unattended inside the locker rooms.

Towel & Equipment Checkout:
The Fitness Center provides both workout and shower towels, as well as various pieces of exercise equipment for its members.  Those who wish to use a towel or piece of equipment must present a photo ID (i.e. H-SC student/faculty/staff card or Driver’s License) to the front desk attendant who will keep the ID at the front desk until the item is returned. 

Individuals, who return damaged equipment or do not return the checked out item, will be charged a fee in order to receive their ID.  Unreturned/damaged equipment fee rates are below:

- Basketballs - $30

- Racquets - $30

- Exercise Equipment - $10

- Towels - $5

- Discs for Disc golf - $5

- TRX Equipment - $190

Other important points to the equipment/towel checkout policy include:

- Members may use a towel without presenting an ID so long as they do so without leaving the front desk area

- Only one towel may be checked out at a time.  To get a second towel, members must return their first towel then check out the second one

- Towels may be checked out with all equipment EXCEPT for basketballs

- Shower towels are for shower/pool use ONLY

- Members may check out only 1 piece of exercise equipment or basketball at a time

- All checked out items MUST be returned the same day

Gym Wipes:
In an effort to keep the Fitness Center equipment clean at the end of each workout session, patrons must disinfect the machine with the provided Gym Wipes that are located throughout the facility in black bins.  Gym Wipes are an alcohol and water based cleaning and disinfecting solution.  The used wipes must be discarded in the appropriate container.

How to use the Cardio Theatre:
In the Cardio Theatre there are seven televisions suspended from the ceiling. To listen to a television, members must tune into the posted radio frequency for that television using headphones and radios with an FM frequency.  Each television has its own set station.  Only the fitness Center staff can change television stations.  Requests for a change of channel should be directed to the Fitness Center Staff.  TV remote is located behind the front desk.

Power Outage:
In case of a power outage, Kirby Field House (this includes TigeRec, Leggett Pool, and Kirby Gymnasium) will close due to safety and liability issues.  Please follow instructions given by the TigeRec staff if this event is to occur.  Again, this precaution is intended for the safety of our patrons. 

Leggett Pool General Policies

  • All patrons must enter through the Fitness Center
  • No one is allowed in the pool unless a lifeguard is on duty
  • Horseplay, such as running, shoving, and dunking are is not permitted
  • Diving is permitted only in designated areas and may be restricted at any time for any reason.  Young children must be supervised when using the diving board
  • Large inner tubes and floats are not permitted
  • An adult must accompany children wearing water wings or infant/child flotation devices
  • Legal dependants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/legal gaurdian at all times
  • No one should hang, sit, or stand on the ropes dividing the swimming lanes
  • Food, glass containers, and metal objects are not permitted in the pool area
  • Persons with sores are not permitted in the pool
  • Appropriate swim attire must be worn.  Infants and toddlers must wear water appropriate diapers
  • No alcohol
  • Patrons MUST take showers prior to swimming in the pool

Pool Party Requests

All those interested in hosting a pool party at TigeRec should contact Betsy Leonard, to make reservations.  Reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance of your party date.  

Inclement Weather/Storm Policy:
Leggett Pool follows a strict Storm Policy outlined by the American Red Cross for lightening and thunder.  The policy states that at first sighting of lightening or sound of thunder a thirty (30) minute period will start until thunder and lightening have stopped and left the area. 

Throughout the summer months, we experience inclement weather and may need to close the pool.  The director is the only person who can close the pool or cut staff in the event of rain or inclement weather.  Refunds are not available for rain days.
