5th Congressional Debate 2006
|
The Wilson Center for Leadership and Longwood University co-sponsored a 5th District Congressional District pre-election debate in Crawley Forum on the campus of Hampden-Sydney College. It was held on Wednesday, November 1 '06, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Participants included incumbent Virgil H. Goode Jr. (R), Rocky Mount, and challengers Albert C. Weed II (D), Nelson County and Joseph Oddo (Independent), Ruckersville.
Hampden-Sydney College President Walter M. Bortz III opened the proceedings. Questions were supplied and posed by a panel of two reporters from the 5th District, WSET news anchor (Lynchburg ABC affiliate) Len Stevens and Martinsville Bulletin Editor Ginny Wray. Dr. Scott Cole, assistant professor of Political Science at Longwood University, served as moderator/time keeper.
While 5th District debates are typically well attended, an even larger audience of approximately 300 attended this event. Even with standing room only, those in attendance were attentive and courteous. The College Republicans held a rally prior to the debate, and the College Democrats hosted a gathering afterwards. Dr. Patricia Cormier, President of Longwood University, delivered closing remarks.
