James Madison Award

The Wilson Center occasionally presents a James Madison Award to persons who have assisted the Center, either directly or indirectly, in carrying out its mission of civic education. Recipients of this award may be, but are not necessarily alumni of Hampden-Sydney College.
On August 31, 2011, President Christopher Howard welcomed General Stanley A. McChrystal, Former Commander of U.S. and International Forces in Afghanistan to campus. Gen McChrystal was presented the James Madision award for his lifelong service to the country.
At 7:30 that evening Gen. McChrystal speak to an overflow crowd in Johns Auditorium. His talk on "Plywood Leadership: Leading in the Post-9/11 World." General McChrystal was the keynote speaker at the rededication ceremony for the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest.
The 2011 James Madison award was presented to the Rev. William E. Thompson. Rev. Thompson is the past chaplain of HSC and retired pastor of College Presbyterian Church. He was presented the award for his lifelong devotion to the ministry, to community service and, more generally, to the victims of social injustice.
In 2008, the James Madison award was given posthumously to Sarah Eldred Terry, who, as the manager of the local 5th District office of Rep. Virgil H. Goode, Jr., served on the Wilson Center Board until her death in December 2007. The consummate public servant, Sarah touched the lives of coutless individuals on the Hampden-Sydney campus, Longwood University, Prince Edward County and the State of Virginia.
The Rev. Dr. Ben C. Mathes received the James Madison award on April 20 '07 in recognition of his extraordinary humanitarian work in some of the most distressed areas of the world, in conjunction with the organization he founded, Rivers of the World.
Dr. Charles W. Sydnor, Jr. received a James Madison award on May 26 '06 on the occasion of his retirement as the President and CEO of Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation, in appreciation for his continued service to the Wilson Center and other Hampden-Sydney Programs.
Four-star general and highly decorated combat veteran Gen. Wayne A. Downing (USA ret) received a Madison Award at Commencement 2006, in recognition of his lifetime of activities on behalf of the country, as well as his work as a commentator for NBC News.

Dr. Margaret V. Blackmon, retiring Superintendent of Schools for Prince Edward County received the award in Spring 2006 for her active role on the Wilson Center Board of Advisors through her tenure as superintendent.
A James Madison award was given posthumously to Shelley Marshall, wife of Wilson Center Board Member and H-SC alumnus Donn Marshall '86, who was in public service with the DIA at the time of her death during the 911 attack of the Pentagon.
A James Madison award recipient in spring 2005 was Mr. Earl F. ("Frosty") Lockwood, who has helped the Wilson Center on numerous occasions over the last decade, providing assistance with obtaining high quality speakers as well as providing financial support.

Dr. Jan Skaloud, an internationally known political scientist from the Czech Republic, received a James Madison Award from the Wilson Center in May 1999 after his whole-hearted participation on the Hampden-Sydney campus while a Fulbright Scholar for a semester. Story...
The first recipient of the James Madison Award was Malcolm R. Myers '57, in recognition of his very generous financial support to the Wilson Center.
