In addition to the three day symposium, a one credit course will be offered during the fall 2004* semester, organized by Dr. Warner Winborne, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Hampden-Sydney College:

INS 285 - The War on Terror: There are identifiable, pivotal moments in history, when the world changes, when in an instant, relationships among people and nations are fundamentally altered. Such was the battle at Salamis, such was the crucifixion of Jesus, such was the first flight by the Wright brothers, and such was the bombing of Hiroshima. The aftermath of these events was a changed world. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 might also constitute such a pivotal event.

This interdisciplinary course will examine the political, legal, economic, scientific, as well as military and national security dimensions of the "war on terror." In addition to attending four seminar classes/lectures and the sessions of the fall 9/11 commemorative conference, students will complete a summer reading assignment and submit a short paper.

  • *First (prerequisite) seminar session - Wednesday, April 28, 2004, 7:00 p.m., Parents and Friends Lounge, described as follows: This presentation is an analytical description of the basic components of counter-insurgency operations. It is tailored specifically to facilitate understanding the dynamics of the present war in Iraq and draws heavily upon doctrinal concepts evolving out of behind- the-line operations of recent history (including the Soviet partisan movement against the Germans in World War II, OSS in occupied Europe) and lessons subsequently learned in conflicts like the war in Viet Nam and elsewhere. The basis design of this program is to help prepare students who are participating for academic credit in H-SC's Fall Symposium "9-11-04: Three Years After. "
  • Second seminar session - Tuesday, August 31, 2004, 7:30 p.m. Crawley Forum. Speaker: Ralph Peters, Commentator and Journalist
  • Third seminar session will be held at the conclusion of the symposium.
  • A book list related to the War on Terrorism has been developed for summer reading. Each student is required to write reports on three of these books and submit them in September at the beginning of the Fall session.
  • Each student in the course is required to attend all eight scheduled symposium events.
