Military Leadership/National Security Studies Awards 2011

On April 1, 2011 the seniors in the Military Leadership/National Security Studies Certificate Program were recognized at the annual Wilson Center Awards banquet.

This event has been traditionally a highlight of the year for the Wilson Center, a time to recognize accomplishments of both alumni in public service and the seniors of the Military Leadership/National Security Studies and Public Service Certificate Programs.

The 2011 banquet honored the sixth group of outstanding young men to complete the Military Leadership/National Security Studies Certificate Program. This program is now recognized as a minor, and is so noted on the transcripts of students who complete the requirements.

 

This years' certificate recipients, flanked by Col. Rucker Snead, Co-Coordinator of the Military Leadership/National Security Studies Program and Dr. Christopher B. Howard, H-SC President, are listed below. 

 

 

Joshua Douglas Aho is a double major in Foreign Affairs and History, with minors in Military Leadership and Asian Studies. A member of the ROTC's Spider Battalion, he has received the Superior Cadet award 3 times, the George Marshal Scholarship, and the Sons of Liberty Award. He was selected to be Battalion Commander, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne and Air Assault Schools as well as the Leadership Development and Assessment Course.  He spent time with the 82nd Airborne last summer.  He has held both the President's and Madison's Scholarships.  Josh is an EMT with the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad.  Josh will be commissioned at graduation.  Post grad plans are to attend the Infantry Basic Officer Leader's Course and Ranger School.

Jordan Christian Harless is an Economics major with a minor in national security studies.  He has been recognized in Who's Who Among College & Universities and serves as a Head Resident Advisor.  Jordan currently is the President of the Campus Wesley Foundation.

 

Stuart Gray Gilchrist is a Foreign Affairs major with double minors in international studies and military leadership and national security studies.  He has been a member of the Garnet and Grey Society, the Rotaract club, a Dean's List Student, a volunteer EMT with the Prince Edward County Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a firefighter with the Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department. Stuart has completed internships with the Roanoke City Police Department and the Roanoke City Emergency Management Department.  He has also studied abroad at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town South Africa.  Stuart is seeking employment in the risk assessment field or with the intelligence community following graduation. <Not Pictured>

Edward Allen Krohn is a Biology and Religion double major, with a minor in Military Leadership and National Security Studies.  He is a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity and also a member of the Tiger Athletic Club.   Edward has served as a Staff Writer for "The Tiger," a member of the H-SC Men's Chorus and the Garnet and Grey Society, a member of the President's Men, The Madisonian Society, the International Club, and the Committee on Elections and Student Surveys.  After graduation, Edward will be Reserve Corps Officer (2LT) with a US Army Medical Services team while also working as a Chief Financial Analyzer Chick-Filet and studying to take the Med School admission exam.

 

John Blanks Dameron Potter will graduate magna cum laude with a major in History and a minor in German. He completed his internship with a local government agency in Ingelheim, Germany. JB has been a member Union Philanthropic Literary Society, the Ethics Bowl, the German Club, the Hobbie Business Ethics Program, the Society of '91 Leadership Program and a copy editor for the Tiger. JB has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa.  After graduation, he hopes to receive a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English to German school students for a year before beginning graduate studies in history.

Kenneth Ray Simon, JR is a Government major with minors in National Security Studies and Rhetoric. Ken has served in Student Government positions as a Senator and President of the Student Body.  He has served as Chairman of the President's Men, Vice President of the Pre-Law Society, Treasurer of the College Republicans, a Resident Advisor, President of the Union Philanthropic Society, Opinion Page Editor of The Tiger, a tutor in the Ferguson Center for Public Speaking, and a Student Court Investigator. He is completing his term as a Student Fellow with the Center for the Study of the Presidency. Ken is a member of both Omicron Delta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha and will be attending Law School in the fall.

William Wiseman is a government major with a national security studies minor.  He has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha.  A Patrick Henry honors scholar, he has selected for the ODAC academic all-conference team in baseball all four years.  William will enter law school, likely at the University of North Carolina, next fall. 

Everett Jones is a foreign affair major with a national security studies minor.  He is a member of the Hobbie Business Ethics Program, a graduate of the Society of 1791Leadership Program and co-founder of the HSC Clay Target Club.  He has completed his ROTC requirements and will be commissioned as a 2^nd Lieutenant in the US Army during graduation exercises.  After graduation, Everett will report to Fort Benning for the basic officer leadership course, but only after he first marries his sweetheart!

 

The 2011 James Y. Simms Award recipient is Joshua Douglas Aho '11.  The Simms award is given annually to a graduating senior who has distinguished himself in the study of national security issues and who has evidenced a desire to make a commitment to the advancement of American's national security interests.
