2012 James Y. Simms Award

Andrew Luke Hargroder

 

 

Kevin Michael Anderson- Kevin is Government major with a national security studies minor.  A Patrick Henry Honors Scholar and Dean's List student, he also has been inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa.  Kevin has been a resident advisor and an active member of Circle K-where he also served as president.   He is a member of the soccer team and served on the NCAA Student Athlete Committee. Kevin completed an internship with the United States Secret Service.  Following graduation, Kevin plans to pursue a job as an Intelligence Analyst.

Damian O'Shay Booker - Damian is an Economics & Commerce major and military leadership minor.  Damian has completed internships with Babcock & Wilcox Company in Lynchburg and Morgan Stanley in New York City.  While at Hampden-Sydney, he has been involved with the Tiger Fund, The Pre-Business Society, The Residence Life Program, Presidents' Men, and The Black Alumni Reunion Planning Committee. Damian has been inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership society.   After graduation, he will move to the Washington DC area where he will begin his career with Booz Allen Hamilton.

Thomas Andrew Calderwood  Thomashas combined a Foreign Affairs major with his military leadership minor.  A Dean's list student, he has been inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honor society.  Thomas has played with the Rugby Club since arriving at HSC and has served as the club's match secretary and the club's treasurer.   His senior thesis focused on American Military Aid to Israel.  Over the past three summers, Thomas has interned with the Fairfax County Public School System in their Human Resources Department. Following graduation, he plans to begin a career in the Intelligence Community. 

 

John L.Gibson IV - Jack is a history major with a minor in military leadership and has been recognized as an outstanding campus leader in the 2012 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.  The recipient of a Venable Scholarship, Jack has received the Willard Bliss History Award and will graduate with Honors in History. He is a member of the varsity lacrosse team and has served as Senior Campaign Class Captain and as President of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is a member of the President's Men and has been inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies.

Andrew Luke Hargroder Luke is a history major with minors in French and military leadership.  He is a brother and officer of Sigma Nu fraternity.  Luke has been inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honors Society.  Luke has made presentations at several conferences, including the Undergraduate Medieval Conference at Longwood University.  Luke's plans are to serve in the Marines followed by a career as a historian and professor.

 

Lain Martin Healey - Lain has combined a BA in history with his minor in military leadership.  He will receive his commission as a 2^nd LT in the US Army Reserves during this year's commencement ceremonies.  He is a member of the US Army Spider Battalion ROTC program, the Garnet and Grey Society, and the German Club. Following graduation, Lain will report as a staff officer to the 730^th Transportation Company in Bell, California.

 

Charles Edwin Horton Ned has combined a Spanish major with minors in both Military Leadership and History.  He is a member of Phi Sigma Iota and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies.   Ned has been a brother of Theta Chi Fraternity and a member of the Garnet and Grey Society.  He also had served as a Spanish tutor. After graduation, Ned plans to join the United States Navy.

 

S. Derrick Maxwell  A government major with a minor in Military Leadership, Derrick has been the student manager for the Fuqua International Communications Center on campus and a member of the Student Senate Library Initiative.  A dean's List student, he has served as chairman of various service initiatives with Circle K International, and is a graduate of the Society of '91 Leadership program.

 

Cody Thomas Murphy - Cody is a government major with minors in military leadership and history.  A Dean's List student and a recipient of the President's Scholarship, he has been inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society and is a graduate of the Society of '91 Leadership program. He has been chairman of Recruitment for Circle K International and played varsity soccer for four years.  During the summer of his junior year, Cody interned with DankosGordon Law Firm and is a member of the Pre-Law Society.  Cody will be attending West Virginia University School of Law.

 

Stewart Joseph Neifert - Stewart is a biology major with a minor in military leadership.  Stewart has been recognized in the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa.  He has been a brother with Chi Beta Phi fraternity, in the Fly Fishing Club, a resident Advisor, a member of the Student Court, and the Union-Philanthropic Literary Society.  Stewart is graduate of the Society of '91 Leadership Program and Departmental Honors in Biology, where is also served as a lab assistant.  Stewart plans to continue his studies after graduation with engineering courses and plans for a career in biomedical engineering.

Frank Robert Rose  Frank has combined his psychology major with a minor in military leadership.   A Patrick Henry scholar, in addition to receiving the President's award for scholarship in the social sciences, he has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Psi Chi.  An avid rugby player, Frank was named to the USA Rugby All Academic Honor Roll Team and served as the club's President and Vice President.  He has completed an honor thesis in psychology and presented his work at the Eastern Psychological Association Conference in Pittsburg.  Following graduation, Frank plans to attend graduate school in clinical psychology at Widener University in Pennsylvania.

Austin Jon Sheppard Austin is a Foreign Affairs major with a minor in military leadership.  Austin has been the recipient of an Army ROTC scholarship and a President's Scholarship.  Austin has studied San Jose, Costa Rica and Barcelona, Spain, and represented H-SC at a Model OAS Washington, DC.  He has completed the Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, and during the summer of his junior year he completed the ROTC Advanced Camp for Leadership Development and Accessions Course at Ft. Lewis, WA.  Following graduation, he will first report to Ft. Lewis for ROTC Advanced Camp and then attend the Quartermaster Basic Officer Leadership Course at Ft. Lee.  

Christopher James Turpin Chris has combined two majors, Foreign Affairs and German, with a minor in military leadership.  He has been inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa and holds a Madison Scholarship. Chris has served on the newspaper staff and is a member of the Society of Collegiate Journalists.  He has also been a member of the Garnet and Grey Society, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, the Union-Philanthropic Society and the Pre-Law Society.  Chris completed an internship with the US Department of State last summer and has studied abroad at the Goethe Institute in Munich and at Eberhard-Karls Universit in Tubingen.  He has accepted a scholarship to study at William and Mary Law School.

Edward Franklin Thomas  Scooter Thomas is a religion major and military leadership minor.  He will be commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Marine Corps during this year's commencement ceremonies. An active brother with the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, he has served on the executive committee, as risk manager, and as treasurer for the fraternity.  During the spring of 2011, Scooter was an intern at "The Institute of World Politics."  Scooter is a member of the Garnet and Grey Society and the Acousticals.  He has completed the USMC Officer Candidate School PLC Option and he is a nationally registered EMT.  After graduation and commissioning, Lt Thomas will report to the Marine Corps Basic School at Quantico.

Sidney Hyatt Vermilya  Sidney has combined a history major with his military leadership minor.  A Dean's List student, he has been involved in the Fly Fishing Club and is a brother in Sigma Nu fraternity.

Thomas Weisel Thomas is a history major with a minor in military leadership.  Thomas played for the rugby club team and is a brother with Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and has served as the secretary.  A member of the Army ROTC Spider Battalion, he will be commissioned a 2^nd Lt as a reserve officer in the Chemical Corps during graduation exercises and report for Basic Officer Leadership Course in January.

Patrick Michael Young Patrick is Foreign Affairs major with a double minor in History and military leadership. He has served as secretary of the College Republicans and on the Student Museum Board.  Patrick has been a member of the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship chapter and of the International Club.   Patrick interned with Bryce Reeves in his campaign for State Senate.
